We propose a new touch screen interaction named as Touch Shadow, which is based on the contact area and the resultant shape of the fingertip when it touches the touch surface. The results of our feasibility evaluation established three degrees of freedom for the Touch Shadow interaction based on three fundamental parameters, the touch surface area, displacement of the touch centroid and directi...

Intelligent video surveillance systems detect pre-configured surveillance events through background modeling, foreground and object extraction, object tracking, and event detection. Shadow regions inside video frames sometimes appear as foreground objects, interfere with ensuing processes, and finally degrade the event detection performance of the systems. Conventional studies have mostly used ...

Shadow puppet play has been a popular traditional storytelling method for many centuries in many parts of Asia. This paper describes a method to model a virtual shadow puppet play using sophisticated computer graphics techniques available in Adobe Flash in order to allow interactive play in real-time environment as well as producing realistic animation. Areal-time method is proposed to produce ...

Shadow detection is critical for robust and reliable vision-based systems for traffic vision analysis. Shadow points are often misclassified as object points causing errors in localization, segmentation, tracking and classification of moving vehicles. This paper proposes a novel shadow elimination method SEBG for resolving shadow occlusion problems of vehicle analysis. Different from some tradi...

This paper describes a method for cast shadow removal from obliquely illuminated images of faces. The method draws on a statistical model of surface normal directions. The model is fitted to shadowed facial images using robust statistics and constraints provided by shape-from-shading. Regions associated with poor fit residuals are associated with shadow regions. We illustrate the method on the ...

A method of generating Deep Shadow Maps from a 3D data set is presented. This method uses ray tracing on the GPU to accumulate opacity and store them in a deep shadow map. The deep shadow map is then sampled based on view direction to determine how much light got to a particular fragment. The shadow maps can also be used to cast shadows onto other objects.

Soft shadows provide important information to viewers about spatial relationships between objects. Generating accurate soft shadows in real time has been a focus of research in computer graphics. Shadow mapping is a standard way of generating hard shadows in real time and several methods including Smoothies [Chan and Durand 2003] and penumbra maps [Wyman and Hansen 2003] extend the standard sha...

A ranked poset P is a Macaulay poset if there is a linear order of the elements of P such that for any m; i the set C(m; i) of the m (with respect to) smallest elements of rank i has minimum{sized shadow among all m{element subsets of the i{th level, and the shadow of C(m; i) consists of the smallest elements of the (i ? 1){st level. P is called shadow{increasing if for all m; i the shadow of C...

A typical shadow-eliminating algorithm is presented in this paper. Algorithms for vehicle detection, edge detection and shadow detection are also given. If the shadow is not separated from the vehicle, the next traffic control processes, like vehicle classification, tracking and speed calculation, will be rather difficult. Our approach for shadow processing runs in real time in low-cost hardwar...

This paper introduces a novel approach to rendering of highquality shadows in real-time. The contemporary approach to shadow rendering in real-time is shadow maps algorithm. The standard shadow maps suffer from discretization and aliasing due to the limited resolution of the shadow texture. Moreover, omnidirectional lights need additional treatment to work correctly, e.g. with dual-paraboloid s...
