All is not well in the fight against menin-gococcal disease. Despite the availability, for decades, of meningococcal vaccines, Neisseria meningitidis remains a leading cause of meningitis, sepsis, and other serious infections in both industrialized nations and the developing world [1]. The meningitis belt in sub-Saharan Africa continues to suffer from devastating epidemics of infection due to s...

We report here the complete genome sequences of two of the earliest known strains of Legionella pneumophila subsp. fraseri Detroit-1 is serogroup 1 and was isolated from a lung biopsy specimen in 1977. Dallas 1E is serogroup 5 and was isolated in 1978 from a cooling tower.

Serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis is a frequent cause of invasive meningococcal disease, yet there are no effective vaccines suitable for routine immunisation. Limited efficacy has been shown with meningococcal outer membrane vacccines in children 4 years and older. Here we review the status of current research and consider new approaches to development of meningococcal serogroup B vaccines.

A Legionella-like organism (strain 570-CO-H [= ATCC 43290]) isolated from the lung tissue of a patient with pneumonia was shown by growth, as well as physiological, serological, and genetic characteristics, to belong to a new Legionella pneumophila serogroup, serogroup 12. Two additional strains were detected with antiserum specific for strain 570-CO-H. These strains were isolated from environm...

We describe two serogroup O157 Escherichia coli strains from Brazilian infants with diarrhea. A variety of assays indicate that these strains belong to the enteropathogenic, not the enterohemorrhagic, pathotype. These strains possess a novel bfpA allele encoding the type IV pilin characteristic of typical enteropathogenic E. coli strains. Our results emphasize the pitfalls of classifying pathog...

We characterized the genetic defect of a capsule-deficient serogroup B meningococcal strain created by Tn916 mutagenesis. The transposon insertion interrupts a capsule biosynthesis gene, synX, which is involved in the production of N-acetyl-D-mannosamine, a precursor of the (alpha 2-->8)-linked polysialic acid capsule of serogroup B meningococci.

This paper describes a sudden increase of meningococcal notifications in the Australian Capital Territory within a 3 month period, and the public health strategies used to manage it. There were 15 cases of meningococcal disease notified to the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) section, Australian Capital Territory Health (ACT Health), between 6 November 2003 and 5 February 2004. This was much ...

OBJECTIVE To determine the persistence of bactericidal antibody titres following immunisation with serogroup C meningococcal glycoconjugate vaccine at age 6-15 years in order to examine changes in persistence of antibodies with age. DESIGN Observational study. SETTING Secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the United Kingdom. PARTICIPANTS Healthy adolescents aged 11-20 years p...

CONTEXT In 1993, Oregon's incidence of serogroup B meningococcal disease began to rise because of a highly clonal group of strains designated enzyme type 5 (ET-5), the first such increase observed in the United States. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact that the ET-5 strain has had on the epidemiology of meningococcal disease in Oregon. DESIGN AND SETTING Epidemiologic analysis of surveillanc...

In the era after the introduction of the meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine, from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2010, serogroup B meningococci were the major cause of invasive meningococcal disease in the province of Québec, Canada, being responsible for 72% of all meningococcal disease cases. Of the 334 invasive serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis strains analyzed, 53.9% belonged to th...
