We estimate the effect of age of school entry on educational outcomes using two different data sets for Germany, sampling pupils at the end of primary school and in the middle of secondary school. Results are obtained based on instrumental variable estimation exploiting the exogenous variation in month of birth. We find robust and significant positive effects on educational outcomes for pupils ...

We discuss a new optical configuration for a hard X-ray imaging beamline that allows one to obtain a secondary source of variable size by using two asymmetrically cut bent silicon crystals in Laue geometry. A feature of this set-up is that radiation from the secondary source propagates parallel to the direction of the incident radiation. Preliminary aspects of the design for the imaging beamlin...

We introduce a new model-based clustering design using product partitions. This Bayesian specification simultaneously incorporates substantive clustering and model-fit subclustering on random effects from a Dirichlet process prior. The estimation algorithm directly includes variable context within clusters into a general clustering model that detects latent clustering effects pervasive in socia...

Background: Increasing concern about adolescent mental health problems has resulted in schools being identified as central sites for their prevention (PsycInfo; ERIC 2000–2012). In this context, SEAL for secondary schools was launched in 2007.Method: The implementation strand of the national evaluation of secondary SEAL comprised longitudinal case studies of nine schools and used multiple metho...

The role of secondary structures and base mutability at different levels of transcription and supercoiling is analyzed in variable region antibody genes VH5, VH94 and VH186.2. The data are consistent with a model of somatic hypermutation in which increasing levels of transcription and secondary structure stability correlate with the initial formation of successive mutable sites. Encoded differe...

Aims. We report on the discovery of J0644+3344, a bright deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CV) binary. Methods. Optical photometric and spectroscopic observations were obtained to determine the nature and characteristics of this CV. Results. Spectral signatures of both binary components and an accretion disk can be seen at optical wavelengths. The optical spectrum shows broad H I, He I, an...

variability of tidal volume and respiratory rate in normally breathing man has long been demonstrated [1]. however because of lack of knowledge and technology primary ventilators could only deliver a fixed tidal volume in a fixed rate the so called volume controlled ventilation (vcv). vcv was volume preset time triggered and cycled and there was no synchronization with patient’s breaths. at tha...

The fate of neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis is variable, with colonic strictures being one rare phenomenon after the insult. We describe here two infants with colonic strictures, which developed secondary to neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis. Infants recovered or in the process of recovery after it should be investigated for possibility of development of colonic strictures.

Received ABSTRACT Observational evidence is presented for periodically variable irradiation of secondary components. This results in strongly modulated mass outflow. Superhumps are then due to enhanced dissi-pation of the kinetic energy of the stream. Qualitative interpretation of superhump periods and their variations is also presented.

We consider a stochastic optimal control problem in the whole space, where the corresponding HJB equation is degenerate, with a quadratic running cost and coefficients with linear growth. In this paper we provide a full mathematical details on the key estimate relating the asymptotic behavior of the solution as the space variable goes to infinite. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000). Prim...
