New concepts in the manipulation of time in video editing are presented, enabling some unique visual effects. These effects include (i) slowing down (or postponing) some dynamic events while speeding up (or advancing) others. (ii) Creating dynamic panoramic images of dynamic scenes. (iii) Generating new views of a scene without a 3D model. (iv) Creating panoramic stereo images. Time manipulatio...
Previously formulated scaling laws relating acoustic waveforms in boreholes to frequency, tool size and borehole diameter were investigated by repeated logging of the same test interval with different frequencies, and by logging adjacent boreholes of different diameters with the same logging system. Acoustic source frequency bands were centered on approximately 15, 20 and 34 kilohertz. Borehole...
The NCAR CAM3 GCM with prescribed, satellite-based snow 3 albedo (SA) is used to investigate the remote effects of snow cover on North-4 ern Hemisphere (NH) winter climate. A pair of 100 ensemble member ex-5 periments are integrated through the autumn-winter season, with prescribed 6 high and low SA over Eurasia (EA). Similar to other non-CAM GCM stud-7 ies using prescribed snow mass, anomalous...
This paper develops a multi regional growth model of the second generation type with horizontal and vertical innovations. Technology goods are tradable between regions, creating a regional analogy of the weak scale effect introduced by Jones (2004). Per capita production in one region is a function of the weighted population sizes of trading partner regions. Thus the scale of partner regions di...
We experimentally evaluate display size in arcade style “bullet hell” shooter games. Two scaling methods were compared: uniform, and non-uniform. Results indicate a strongly linear increase of performance with display diagonal size. This was more pronounced with non-uniform scaling. Keywords— Scale, display size, games.
This paper analyses scale effects for actuator types which are strong candidates for micro-actuation: shape memory alloys (SMAS), electrostatic, electromagnetic and piezoelectric actuators. SMA actuators are studied in detail and compared to the other actuator types on a basis of force, response time, and power densi~. Much of the analysis is based on thermal aspects and scaling effects on both...
Atom interferometers can be used to study phenomena leading to irreversibility and dissipation, induced by the dynamics of fundamental objects (strings and branes) at a large mass scale. Using an effective, but physically consistent description in terms of a master equation of Lindblad form, the modifications of the interferometric pattern induced by the new phenomena are analyzed in detail. We...
Floristic Quality Assessment (FQA) is increasingly influential for making land management decisions, for directing conservation policy, and for research. But, the basic ecological properties and limitations of its metrics are ill defined and not well understood-especially those related to sample methods and scale. Nested plot data from a remnant tallgrass prairie sampled annually over a 12-year...
Load prediction is an important tool for grid utilities and power companies for managing the power system. This has traditionally mainly been applied at transmission and subtransmission system levels. However, as the traditional grid evolves into a smart grid, load prediction at smaller scales becomes necessary for efficient management and operation. In this paper we investigate how the qualita...
A theoretical approach is developed to quantify hydrophobic hydration and interactions on a molecular scale, with the goal of insight into the molecular origins of hydrophobic effects. The model is based on the fundamental relation between the probability for cavity formation in bulk water resulting from molecular-scale density fluctuations, and the hydration free energy of the simplest hydroph...
