A novel [3]rotaxane composed of two 25-membered crownophanes and one axle molecule having two anthryl end groups was successfully synthesized via covalent bond formation followed by aminolysis, and can incorporate caesium ion into the space between the two macrocycles as a 1 : 1 sandwich-type complex, whereas it makes a 1 : 2 complex with lithium ion.

An NIR-triggered drug delivery system was developed by capping photo-switchable azobenzene-based rotaxane onto Au nanorod-mesoporous silica core-shell hybrids. Drug release from the nanocarrier in zebrafish embryo models could be controlled remotely under NIR irradiation, showing significant drug spreading to the adjacent tissues.

The combination of a disulfonated-dibenzo-24crown-8 ether wheel and a dicationic 1,2-bis(pyridinium)ethane axle yields a neutral [2]pseudorotaxane which in combination with neutral metallic units such as a Cu(II)benzoate paddlewheel or Cu(I)Br unit yields one-dimensional coordination polymers (linear and bent) which are the first examples of charge neutral, metal-organic rotaxane frameworks.

A modified dumbbell obtained by replacing one of the phenyl groups of the dibenzylammonium with a strong electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group templated the synthesis of the smallest [2]rotaxane reported so far. The trifluoromethyl group not only enhances the templating effect of the dumbbell but also acts as the stopper to prevent dethreading of a [20]crown ether macrocycle.
