Biofilm production, gel and esp gene carriage was enumerated among forty six vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin susceptible enterococci (VSE) beach isolates. A higher proportion (61.54%) of biofilm producers was observed among beach sand as compared to beach water enterococci isolates (30%) indicating that enterococci within the sand column may be more dependent on biofilm pr...
We investigated the impact of probiotics on the intestinal carriage of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). Administration of Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lcr35 but not Escherichia coli Nissle reduced, although not significantly, the density of VRE colonization in a murine model. No effect of Lcr35 was observed in a double-blind placebo randomized study, involving nine patients.
Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were detected in samples of sewage obtained downstream of hospitals of the Porto area in Portugal, and in samples from the Douro Estuary. Clonal analysis, Tn1546 typing, and presence of putative virulence traits indicate the clinical origin of these isolates. This observation highlights the importance of hospital sewage in the VRE contamination of the envi...
Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have been reported as a major hazard to human and animal health, causing problems like clinical mastitis in dairy cattle nosocomial infections humans. The aim of this study was determine the vitro microbial susceptibility profile isolated from farms São Paulo Minas Gerais states, Brazil. A total 310 samples Enterococcus species bovine (52) bulk tank...
In 2012, there was an increase in vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) isolated from the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Cologne. Using whole-genome sequencing it was possible to establish that bloodstream infections with VRE were not the result of an outbreak or cross infections.
BACKGROUND Patient-specific risk factors for acquisition of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) among hospitalized patients are becoming well defined. However, few studies have reported data on the institutional risk factors, including rates of antimicrobial use, that predict rates of VRE. Identifying modifiable institutional factors can advance quality-improvement efforts to minimize hospit...
BACKGROUND Enterococci become clinically important especially in immune compromised patients and important causes of nosocomial infections. Data on the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and associated factors of enterococci are scarce in Ethiopia. METHODS A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Teaching Hospital from February 28, 2014 t...
BACKGROUND The use of vancomycin has continued to expand because of the increasing number of patients infected or colonized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, causing an increase in the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). METHODS Review of the pertinent English language literature. RESULTS Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp. are being identified more oft...
A mouse model of intestinal colonization with vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) was used to study the effect of different beta-lactam antibiotics on establishment of VRE colonization. A clinical VanB VRE isolate, Enterococcus faecium C68 (102 or 104 cfu), was inoculated by gastric gavage in conjunction with subcutaneous administration of antibiotics. The MIC of ceftriaxone and ticarcillin ...
Daptomycin is the only antibiotic with in vitro bactericidal activity against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Data on the potential emergence of daptomycin nonsusceptibility among enterococci remain limited. We systematically reviewed the published literature for reports of isolates of enterococci that were daptomycin nonsuscep...
