In concrete repair systems, material properties of the repair material and the interface are greatly influenced by the moisture exchange between the repair material and the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it can absorb water from the repair material and reduce its effective water-to-cement ratio (w/c). This further affects the hydration rate of cement based material. In addition to the chan...

Paraesophageal hiatus hernia (PEHH) is an uncommon type of diaphragmatic hernia in the pediatric age group. Two patients aged 5-months and 8-months presented with respiratory symptoms and underwent a laparoscopic repair. Preoperative assessment included chest x-ray and CT scan. We suggest that laparoscopic repair of PEHH in infants is safe and preferred mode of the treatment.

T he ability of dibucain, a local anesthetic, to enhance the cytotoxicity of and the repair of potentially lethal damage induced by pepleomycin or X-rays has been studied in exponential and plateau phase cultures of Chinese hamster cells. No enhancement of X-ray cytotoxicity or inhibition of repair from X-ray injury was observed, but dibucain produced very significant enhancement of pepleomycin...

BACKGROUND There has recently been a strong interest in the inter-individual variation in normal tissue and tumor response to radiotherapy (RT), because tissue radiosensitivity seems to be under genetic control. Evidence is accumulating on the role of polymorphic genetic variants, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that could influence normal tissue response after radiation. The mos...

The aim of the study was to examine the association between polymorphisms of DNA repair genes and chromosomal damage of 1,3-butadiene- (BD-) exposed workers. The study was conducted in 45 pairs of occupationally exposed workers in a BD product workshop and matched control workers in an administrative office and a circulatory water workshop in China. Newly developed biomarkers (micronuclei, MNi;...

X-ray repair cross-complementing protein-1 (XRCC1)-de®cient cells are sensitive to DNA damaging agents and have delayed processing of DNA base lesions. In support of its role in base excision repair, it was found that XRCC1 forms a tight complex with DNA ligase IIIa and also interacts with DNA polymerase b (Pol b) and other base excision repair (BER) proteins. We have isolated wild-type XRCC1±D...

Altered DNA repair capacity can result in increased susceptibility to cancer. The base excision repair (BER) pathway effectively removes DNA damage caused by ionizing radiation and reactive oxidative species (ROS). In the current study, we analyzed the possible relation of polymorphisms in BER genes, including 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase (OGG1), apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1), and...

A rare hereditary disorder, Fanconi anemia (FA), is caused by mutations in an array of genes, which interact in a common FA pathway/network. These genes encode components of the FA "core" complex, a key factor FancD2, the familial breast cancer suppressor BRCA2/FancD1, and Brip1/FancJ helicase. Although BRCA2 is known to play a pivotal role in homologous recombination repair by regulating Rad51...

The scaffold protein X-ray repair cross-complementing 1 (XRCC1) interacts with multiple enzymes involved in DNA base excision repair and single-strand break repair (SSBR) and is important for genetic integrity and normal neurological function. One of the most important interactions of XRCC1 is that with polynucleotide kinase/phosphatase (PNKP), a dual-function DNA kinase/phosphatase that proces...

BACKGROUND X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) gene is a DNA repair gene and its non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) may influence DNA repair capacity which has been considered as a modifying risk factor for cancer development. METHODS A case-control study was conducted to investigate impact of three frequently studied polymorphisms (Arg194Trp, Arg280His and Arg3...
