Following limb amputation patients continue to feel the vivid presence of a phantom limb. A majority of patients also experience pain in the phantom and sometimes (as in our case DS) the pain is severe. Remarkably we find that optically 'resurrecting' the phantom with a mirror and using a lens to make the phantom appear to shrink caused the pain to 'shrink' as well.
BACKGROUND Amputation of an extremity often results in the sensation of a "phantom limb" where the patient feels that the limb that has been amputated is still present. This is frequently accompanied by "phantom limb pain". We report here the use of milnacipran, a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, to treat phantom limb pain after amputation of injured or diseased limbs in three p...
The loss of a limb leads to sensorimotor modifications that are frequently accompanied by the vivid experience that the missing limb is still present, and that it can be moved at will. Furthermore, amputees can clearly distinguish between phantom movements of the fingers and of more proximal joints, like movements of the elbow. This phenomenon raises the question of whether these specific phant...
Development and comparison of spine-shaped phantoms generated by two different 3D-printing technologies, digital light processing (DLP) and Polyjet has been purposed to utilize in patient-specific quality assurance (QA) of stereotactic body radiation treatment. The developed 3D-printed spine QA phantom consisted of an acrylic body phantom and a 3D-printed spine shaped object. DLP and Polyjet 3D...
Infarcts of the corpus callosum have not been well documented in the radiologic literature. We present five cases that were unusual in either their clinical or radiologic presentation or both. Biopsies were performed in three of the five cases, and in time, all lesions evolved in a pattern consistent with infarct. Recognition of the varied clinical and radiologic presentation of infarcts of the...
OBJECTIVE We conducted a systematic review of the literature to define the evidence for radiologic dating of fractures in children in the context of child protection. CONCLUSION Radiologic dating of fractures is an inexact science. Most radiologists date fractures on the basis of their personal clinical experience, and the literature provides little consistent data to act as a resource. There...
Background: About 50% of heavy elements are produced by the slow neutron capture process ($s$ process) in stars. The element gallium is mostly during weak $s$ massive stars.Purpose: Our activation at ${k}_{\mathrm{B}}T\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\approx}25$ keV first experiment a series and time-of-flight measurements on $^{69}\mathrm{Ga}$ $^{71}\mathrm{Ga}$ relevant for astrophysics.M...
Although there is a vast clinical literature on phantom limbs, there have been no experimental studies on the effects of visual input on phantom sensations. We introduce an inexpensive new device--a 'virtual reality box'--to resurrect the phantom visually to study inter-sensory effects. A mirror is placed vertically on the table so that the mirror reflection of the patient's intact had is 'supe...
OBJECTIVE The objective of this article is to provide a practical review of the conditions other than cirrhosis that can result in diffuse surface nodularity of the liver or portal hypertension. CONCLUSION Conditions that can mimic cirrhosis on imaging include pseudocirrhosis of treated breast cancer metastases to the liver, fulminant hepatic failure, miliary metastases, sarcoidosis, schistos...
