In the presence of oriented smectic liquid crystal defects, hybrid systems of nanoparticles/liquid crystals form straight chains of nanoparticles of length longer than tens of micrometers and width equal to one single nanoparticle. The interparticle distance in a chain can be varied between a few micrometers and 1.5 nm, highlighting the control of optical absorption by light polarization monito...

We derive the markovian description for the nonequilibrium brownian motion of a heated nanoparticle in a simple solvent with a temperature-dependent viscosity. Our analytical results for the generalized fluctuation-dissipation and Stokes-Einstein relations compare favorably with measurements of laser-heated gold nanoparticles and provide a practical rational basis for emerging photothermal trac...

This review will first look at the various covalent strategies that have been developed to attach drugs to gold nanoparticles as well as the strengths and limitations of such strategies. After examining general strategies for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles and their subsequent covalent functionalization, this review will focus on nanoparticle conjugates for gene therapy, antibacterial, and...

Biocompatible DNA/gold nanoparticle complex with a protective calcium phosphate (CaP) coating was prepared by incubating DNA/gold nanoparticle complex coated by hyaluronic acid in SBF (simulated body fluid) with a Ca concentration above 2 mM. The CaP-coated DNA complex was revealed to have high compatibility with cells and resistance against enzymatic degradation. By immersion in acetate buffer...

targeting riboflavin binding protein (RFBP), which acts as a model protein for the riboflavin receptor. By characterizing the binding interactions between riboflavin dendrimer gold nanoparticle conjugates and RFBP, the efficacy of this platform for a targeted approach of drug delivery can be predicted more accurately. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used for biological imaging studies of thes...

Hexagonal patterns of gold nanorods were made by assembling gold nanorod-coated poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) microgels. The required population of nanorods on the microgels was achieved by attaching nanoparticle seeds on the latter and growing them to nanorods. The various materials prepared were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Similar experiments with...

We propose a family of exact solutions of Maxwell's equations to model some aspects of the imaging process involved in the scanning surface plasmon microscope (SSPM). More precisely, we compute the SSPM response of a spherical nanoparticle immobilized close to a thin gold layer and illuminated by a tightly focused spot. We discuss the influence of parameters such as the defocus and the width of...

A multicomponent nanostructure comprising of gold nanorod-nanoparticle (AuNR-AuNP) composites was fabricated to detect thrombin at subnanomolar concentrations in diluted human blood serum. Simulation and experiments revealed that the strong electromagnetic coupling resonance at the nanorod-nanoparticle junction of these probes can be used to construct highly sensitive SERS aptasensors.

Using in situ transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrated that gold nanoparticles are unified via "oriented attachment" assisted either by nanoparticle rotation or grain boundary migration at the attachment interface. We also observed that the combined nanoparticle changes shape with stable facet planes via surface diffusion, along with recrystallization.
