Liquid feed direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are promising candidates for portable power applications. However, owing to the problems associated with expensive Pt-based catalysts, viz., CO poisoning, a promising approach is to use complex oxides of the type ABO3 (A = Sr, Ce, La, etc. and B = Co, Fe, Ni, Pt, Ru, etc.).

Esters reduce to form ethers and alcohols on contact with metal nanoparticles supported Brønsted acidic faujasite (M-FAU) that cleave C−O bonds by hydrogenation hydrogenolysis pathways. Rates selectivities for each pathway depend the identity (M=Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt). Pt-FAU gives propyl acetate consumption rates up 100 times greater than other M-FAU catalysts provides an ethyl ether sele...

Ruthenium, palladium and platinum fall within the group of noble metals that are widely used in catalysis, especially for electrocatalytic production hydrogen. The dominant phase bulk Ru metal is hexagonal close-packed (hcp), which has been studied extensively. However, significantly less attention paid to face-centred cubic (fcc) phases, have observed nanoparticles. In this study, we carried o...

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) is a sustainable pathway for the synthesis of value-added organic compounds, provided affordable catalysts with high activity, selectivity and durability are developed. Here, we synthesize Cu/C, Ni/C, and CuNi/C nanoparticles and compare their performance to Pt/C, Ru/C, PtRu/C for the ECH of hydroxyacetone, a bio-derived feedstock surrogate containing a carb...

The development of highly potential electrocatalysts for acidic water electrolysis is particularly desirable many energy-related processes. Herein, we demonstrated a versatile strategy to activate and stabilize RuO2-based electrocatalyst splitting by trace Pt, where Pt plays an essential role in promoting oxygen evolution reaction (OER), can simultaneously act as the active site hydrogen (HER)....

The photoreduction process of PtCl(6)2- to Pt nanoparticles in poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) solutions upon UV light irradiation was investigated by monitoring the change in the diffusion coefficient (D). The D values of chemical species during UV irradiation was measured by the laser-induced transient grating (TG) method. The TG signal of the PtCl(6)2- solution before UV irradiation was composed...

AuRu bimetallic catalysts have been prepared by sequential deposition of Au on Ru or vice versa obtaining different nanostructures: when Ru has been deposited on Au, a Au(core)-Ru(shell) has been observed, whereas the deposition of Au on Ru leads to a bimetallic phase with Ru enrichment on the surface. In the latter case, the unexpected Ru enrichment could be attributed to the weak adhesion of ...

The reduction of [Pt(COD)(CH3)2] with CO in the presence of hexadecylamine (HDA) and oleic acid (OlAc) leads to amine carbonylation and formation of an air-stable colloidal solution of N,N'-bis(hexadecyl)urea-stabilized Pt(0) nanoparticles. These air-stable colloidal solutions can be used to form thin films of Pt nanoparticles on a silicon substrate.

Boron doping into carbon nanotubes improves the CO tolerance and increases the utilization efficiency of the supported Pt nanoparticles. Boron doping leads to a uniform deposition of Pt nanoparticles and also facilitates the removal of CO from the Pt surface, resulting in an increase in the electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation.
