Metaphor is indispensable in poetry. It showcases the poet’s creativity, and contributes to the overall emotional pertinence of the poem while honing its specific rhetorical impact. Previous work on metaphor detection relies on either rulebased or statistical models, none of them applied to poetry. Our method focuses on metaphor detection in a poetry corpus. It combines rule-based and statistic...

This paper discusses metaphor as a figure of speech first, and then talks about metaphor and synaesthesia from a cognitive perspective. In order to explain the metaphorical use of sense-impression in English, it borrows examples from some literary works. Finally, it draws the conclusion that metaphor has exerted a great influence on sense-impression in English.

The Metaphor is intended to contribute to the Agile Programming value of communication. Previously, some of the author studied the Metaphor as a means of communication among team members and between them and clients. This paper examines the Metaphor’s contribution to the software architecture. Both experiments seem to reveal that the Metaphor has poor effectiveness.

Despite the increased salience of metaphor in organization theory, current perspectives are flawed and misguided in assuming that metaphor can be explained with the so-called comparison model. I therefore outline an alternative model of metaphor understanding—the domains-interaction model—which suggests that metaphor involves the conjunction of whole semantic domains in which a correspondence b...

This paper focuses on the interpretation of metaphor in discourse. We build on previous work [1] in which we provide a formalization in a computationally-oriented formal semantic framework of a set of mappings that we claim are required for the interpretation of map-transcending metaphor. Such mappings are domain-independent and are identified as invariant adjuncts to any conceptual metaphor. I...

This article looks at the use of extended metaphor in teaching. In his De Poetics, Aristotle wrote that “the greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor. It is the one thing that cannot be learnt from others; it is also a sign of genius, since a good metaphor implies an intuitive perception of the similarity in dissirdars.” 1 By Aristotle’s standards, few of us would qualify as “a master of metaphor. ” In fact, merely distinguishing the term “metaph...

IRELAND Please address all correspondence (re paper and requests for reprints) to Tony Veale at the above address. Abstract Once viewed as a rhetorical and superficial language phenomenon, metaphor is now recognized to serve a fundamental role in our conceptual structuring and language comprehension processes. In particular, it is argued that certain experiential metaphors based upon intuitions...

This study compares the stage metaphor and the channel strip metaphor in terms of performance. Traditionally, music mixing consoles employ a channels strip control metaphor for adjusting parameters such as volume and panning of each track. An alternative control metaphor, the so-called stage metaphor lets the user adjust volume and panning by positioning tracks relative to a virtual listening p...

Time is frequently expressed with spatial motion, using one of three different metaphor types: moving-time, moving-ego, and sequence-as-position. Previous work shows that children can understand and explain moving-time metaphors by age five (Özçalışkan, 2005). In this study, we focus on all three metaphor types for time, and ask whether metaphor type has an effect on children's metaphor compreh...
