Aaronson, I. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 479. Secondary chloride-losing diarrhoea. Observations on stool electrolytes in infants after bowel surgery. Among 40 infants with postoperative diarrhoea, 3 were found to have a stool chloride concentration in excess of the sum of sodium and potassium ion concentrations. All 3 had had a recent episodof intestinal obstruction and had de...

We report a case of flaccid weakness in a 40 year old male farmer who presented to us with fever and bodyache. The patient had leptospirosis with a non- oliguric renal failure and flaccid weakness secondary to hypokalemia which improved following potassium correction and conservative measures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Potassium channels are important regulators of resting tone in large cerebral arteries, but their activity and distribution may vary according to vessel location and species studied. In the cerebral microcirculation in vivo, however, these channels appear to be silent at rest. Our goal was to determine the activity of potassium channels of brain arterioles from 2 origins ...

The vasoactive properties of hypoxia, elevated extracellular potassium concentration ([K]o), and hyperosmolarity were studied in helical strip preparations of small coronary and deep femoral arteries (260-700 nm, o.d.) equilibrated in a physiological salt solution with an oxygen tension (Po») of 100 mm Hg, [Kb of 3.18 mM, and an osmolarity of 304 milliosmoles/ liter. Increasing [K \, (2-6 mM) o...

Opioids have been shown to cause a potent inhibition of neurons in the locus ceruleus (LC) in vivo in brain slices and isolated neurons; however, the kinetics of opioid action have not been described. In this study, we used acutely isolated LC neurons to examine opioid and alpha2-adrenoceptor action on potassium and calcium currents. [Met]Enkephalin (ME), [D-Ser2,Leu5,Thr6]-enkephalin, etorphin...

bananas are climacteric fruits and controlling ripening is effective in reducing loss. this experiment studied the effect of packaging (plastic bag, edible wax and plastic bag, plastic bag and 2 or 4 g/kg potassium permanganate) over 5 weeks of cold storage on the quality and characteristics of cavendish cultivar bananas. the samples were removed from storage at 8, 16, 24, 32 and 40 days and fr...
