Cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone can be enantioselectively functionalized in the 3-position with up to 92% ee and 87% ee, respectively, by the base-promoted dimerization of the corresponding enones using 3,4,5-tribenzyloxybenzyl cinchoninium bromide, as a new effective catalyst.

We report a catalytic enantioselective electrophilic fluorination of alkenes to form tertiary and quaternary C(sp3)-F bonds and generate β-amino- and β-aryl-allylic fluorides. The reaction takes advantage of the ability of chiral phosphate anions to serve as solid-liquid phase transfer catalysts and hydrogen bond with directing groups on the substrate. A variety of heterocyclic, carbocyclic, an...

New bifunctional chiral ammonium salts were investigated in an asymmetric cascade synthesis of a key building block for a variety of biologically relevant isoindolinones. With this chiral compound in hand, the development of further transformations allowed for the synthesis of diverse derivatives of high pharmaceutical value, such as the Belliotti (S)-PD172938 and arylated analogues with hypnot...

[reaction: see text] The catalytic enantioselective electrophilic fluorination promoted by quaternary ammonium salt from cinchonine as a phase-transfer catalyst is described. Treatment of beta-keto esters with N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide as the fluorine source under mild reaction conditions afforded the corresponding alpha-fluoro beta-keto esters in exellent yields with good to moderate enantiom...

This paper is directed towards the development of safe, and thermally stable solid polymer electrolytes. Linear phosphorus-containing (co)polyesters are described, including their synthesis, thermal analysis, conductivity, and non-flammability. Polycondensation of phenylphosphonic dichloride (PPD) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 12000) with and without bisphenol A (BA) was carried out using sol...

A chiral anion phase-transfer system for enantioselective halogenation is described. Highly insoluble, ionic reagents were developed as electrophilic bromine and iodine sources, and application of this system to o-anilidostyrenes afforded halogenated 4H-3,1-benzoxazines with excellent yield and enantioselectivity.

Mechanisms that regulate the nitric oxide synthase enzymes (NOS) are of interest in biology and medicine. Although NOS catalysis relies on domain motions, and is activated by calmodulin binding, the relationships are unclear. We used single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) spectroscopy to elucidate the conformational states distribution and associated conformational fluctu...

Laccases (EC 1.10.3.2) are copper-containing oxidoreductases that have a relatively high redox potential which enables them to catalyze oxidation of phenolic compounds, including lignin-derived phenolics. The laccase-catalyzed oxidation of phenolics is accompanied by concomitant reduction of dioxygen to water via copper catalysis and involves a series of electron transfer reactions balanced by ...

Rate constants for acid catalysis of the reactions of N-chlorodimethylamine (1), N-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethylamine (2) and N,N-dichlorotaurine (3) with iodide ion were determined in H(2)O at 25 degrees C and I = 0.5 (NaClO(4)). The failure to detect significant catalysis by general acids of chlorine transfer from 1 to the nucleophile, together with the observed inverse solvent deuterium isotop...
