Decreased fibrinolytic activity has been reported in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. To determine whether oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL), which accumulates in atherosclerotic arteries, modulates the endothelial fibrinolytic system, cultures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were incubated with low-density lipoproteins or lipids, and levels of plasminogen activator in...

OBJECTIVE Recent studies support an inflammatory basis for atherosclerosis. Patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatical disorders are at increased risk for cardiovascular events, and this can be partially attributed to the inhibition of fibrinolytic system. TNF a inhibitors such as infliximab are shown to retard the progression of inflammatory arthritides. In this study, we investigated the ...

We analyzed the levels of circulating tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 in acute hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The levels of tPA commonly increased in both diseases, whereas PAI-1 correlated with disease severity in HCPS but not in HFRS.

Endothelial function, measured noninvasively by brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), has been shown to be impaired in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We hypothesized that depressed FMD in SLE patients is associated with increased levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), an inhibitor of fibrinolysis and regulator of vasoactivity. In this cross-sectional s...

Thrombosis is one of the leading causes of mortality in cancer patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the concentrations and activities of selected haemostatic parameters in the plasma of patients diagnosed with breast cancer (BrCa) and to make an attempt at finding associations with their levels and selected clinicopathological factors; clinical classification, histological grading, an...

The effect of interleukin-4 (IL-4) on the fibrinolytic system of human microvascular and macrovascular endothelial cells in culture was studied. Only foreskin microvascular endothelial cells (EC) responded to IL-4 treatment with a dose- and time-dependent increase in urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA) (control: 3.0 +/- 0.8 ng/10(5) cells/24 h; 200 U/mL IL-4: 6.7 +/- 0.8 ng/10(5) cells/...

Endothelial cells from both human retinal microvessels (HME) and fetal bovine aortic endothelium (FBAE) were grown in aggregate cultures alone, or with either retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells or fibroblasts. The levels of plasminogen activator (PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) in the conditioned media of the various aggregate types were measured. High PA levels were detected ...

Tumor cell invasion and metastasis is a complex, multistep process that is postulated to require degradation of extracellular matrix at several steps. Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) is expressed on the cell surface of B16 murine melanoma cells and is thought to contribute to the pericellular proteolysis necessary for tumor cell migration. In vitro modification of B16 melanoma cell s...

Introduction: A common polymorphism 4G/5G in the promoter region of the Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) gene has been reported to influence the expression levels of PAI-1. According to the evidence, progression of breast cancer can be associated with elevated levels of PAI-1, it seems that evaluation of a possible correlation between the polymorphism and clinical status of breast canc...
