Diffusion anoxia. By Bernard Raymond Fink. Anesthesiology 1955; 16:511-14. In 1955, Dr. Bernard Raymond Fink published his findings that described the mechanism by which hypoxemia occurred when nitrous oxide-oxygen anesthesia was discontinued and room air breathing commenced. Using an ear oximeter and brachial artery blood gases, he measured oxygen saturation in eight healthy patients who had r...
The fluorescent protein KillerRed generates reactive oxygen species through the CALI effect. This property paves the way for the design of genetically encoded photosensitizers for use in cell killing and cancer photodynamic therapy. In this article, we have investigated the diffusion pathways of di-oxygen and the superoxide radical in KillerRed, using molecular dynamics simulations. Our results...
We report a simple and facile protocol to fabricate mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) gradients on different surfaces. An oxygen diffusion phenomenon was used for dopamine autoxidation to form thickness gradients of PDA on different substrates. These PDA gradients showed gradual changes in thickness, roughness, wettability and light transmittance.
The phenomenon of diffusion hypoxia is commonly believed to occur unless nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation sedation is followed by "washout" with 100% oxygen for 5 minutes upon termination of the flow of nitrous oxide. When systematically studied, however, this phenomenon generally appears to be unfounded. The present study evaluated the effect of breathing room air instead of 100% oxygen in heal...
Oxygen equilibrium curves have been widely used to understand oxygen transport in numerous organisms. A major challenge has been to monitor oxygen binding characteristics and concomitant pH changes as they occur in vivo, in limited sample volumes. Here we report a technique allowing highly resolved and simultaneous monitoring of pH and blood pigment saturation in minute blood volumes. We equipp...
Both the oxygen diffusion rate and the oxygen solubility vary with depth into the interior of biological membranes. The product of these two gradients generates a single gradient, a permeability gradient, which is a smooth continuous function of the distance from the center of the membrane. Using electron paramagnetic resonance and the spin-probe method, the relaxation gradient of oxygen, which...
Many high-altitude vertebrates have evolved increased capacities in their oxygen transport cascade (ventilation, pulmonary diffusion, circulation and tissue diffusion), enhancing oxygen transfer from the atmosphere to mitochondria. However, the extent of interspecies variation in the control processes that dictate hypoxia responses remains largely unknown. We compared the metabolic, cardiovascu...

of 02 in cat cerebral cortex. Am. communication describes a study of in vitro cat cerebral cortex with a micro polarographic oxygen electrode. Profiles of Poe versus depth into the tissue were measured while oxygenated saline at 37 C was flowing over the tissue. The measurements were made in the uncut side of a tissue slice within 5 min after excising the tissue from the animal. From the critic...
