The vast majority of lymphocytes generated daily in the chicken bursa of Fabricius do not emigrate to the periphery but die in situ. Apoptotic cells in the bursa can be readily detected by the presence of fragmented DNA and by the large numbers of condensed cellular nuclei observed by electron microscopy. Consequently, most newly generated lymphocytes die by programmed cell death. We show that ...
This study was carried out to determine the influence of vit. E with selenium, poultry star, levamezol and acetic acid on immune response to infections bursal disease in broiler fed diet with aflatoxin-contaminated aflatoxin poisons. 200 one-day old chicks were divided randomly into six equal groups, All groups (except 6 group) were fed diet with aflatoxincontaminated feed (from 1 to 40 days ol...
Baker's cyst, or popliteal cyst, is a fluid-filled mass that is a distention of a preexisting bursa in the popliteal fossa, most commonly the gastrocnemio-semimembranosus bursa. This bursa is unique in that it communicates with the knee joint, unlike other periarticular bursae, via an opening in the joint capsule posterior to the medial femoral condyle. Many have theorized that this opening cre...
We describe two new species, Austrognathia glandifera and Austrognatharia orientis using observations on squeezed, live specimens as well as histological sections and transmission electron microscopy. The protonephridia of Austrognatharia orientis are composed of a terminal cell, a canal cell, and a nephroporus cell. The monociliated terminal cell constitutes the so-called filtration area. The ...
Isolation and characterization of a reovirus from common eiders (Somateria mollissima) from Finland.
Samples of brain, intestine, liver, lung, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius were collected from five common eider (Somateria mollissima) duckling carcasses during a die-off in the western Gulf of Finland (59 degrees 50'N, 23 degrees 15'E) in June 1996. No viral activity was observed in specific-pathogen-free chicken embryos inoculated with tissue suspensions, but samples of bursa of Fabricius from...
We attempted the isolation of variant infectious bursal disease (IBD) viruses by using sentinel chickens immunized with inactivated classical-type IBD vaccine. Immunized sentinel chickens with high levels of neutralizing antibodies and non-immunized sentinel chickens were raised together with broiler chickens in a commercial farm. Severe atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius was observed from the s...
Lipoma arborescens is a rare benign entity characterized by proliferation of villous fat tissue in subsynovial layer that usually affects the knee joint. We report a case of lipoma arborescens in bicipitoradial bursa of the elbow in a 44 year-old female patient. In spite of this rare location, radiographic findings by ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging made diagnosis possible.
