We demonstrate, through numerical simulations, that an appropriately chosen nonuniformly polarized coherent optical field can have appreciably smaller scintillation than comparable beams of uniform polarization. This results from the fact that a nonuniformly polarized field acts as an effective two-mode partially coherent field. The results described here are of direct relevance to the developm...
We present the compensation of the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) in the long-haul n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) coherent optical transmission system, by employing a scheme of phase modulated optical pilot carrier. Detailed analysis of a novel highly linear phase-locked coherent optical demodulator is presented. We investigate how loop gain, phase-modulator non-linearity and amplitude modulation influence the Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR) of the demodulated signal. ©2006 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.1660) Coherent communications; (120.5060) Phase modulation
The inphase/quadrature (I/Q) amplitude and phase imbalance effects are studied in coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems. An analytical model for the I/Q imbalance is developed and supported by simulation results. The results indicate that the I/Q imbalance degrades the BER performance considerably. The resonant heating of a harmonically trapped ion by a standing-wave light field is described as a quantum stochastic process combining a coherent Schrödinger evolution with Bohr-Einstein quantum jumps. Quantum and semi-quantum treatments are compared. ©c 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (270.2500) Fluctuations, relaxations, and noise; (270.1670) Coherent optical effects.
A novel coherent optical receiver is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using a feedback technique capable of reducing the nonlinear distortion in a traditional receiver while retaining the signal to noise ratio. ©2006 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.1660) Coherent communications; (120.5060) Phase modulation
We microscopically model the decoherence dynamics of entangled coherent states of two optical modes under the influence of vacuum fluctuation. We derive an exact master equation with time-dependent coefficients reflecting the memory effect of the environment, by using the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory in the coherent-state representation. Under the Markovian approximation, our mast...
