We present a case of iliopsoas abscess in an immunocompetent patient. She experienced three weeks of worsening right hip pain, which was initially misdiagnosed as degenerative joint disease. This led to admission to the Intensive Care Unit for severe sepsis. The patient improved with intravenous antibiotics and percutaneous abscess drainage.
A 66-year-old lady presented with 4 months history of intermittent fever, epigastric pain which radiated to the back. She reported no symptoms of diarrhoea or constipation. She did not smoke and had no history of alcohol intake. She was premorbidly independent. Her blood pressure was 123/62 mmHg, pulse 90 beats per minute and she was febrile. Abdominal examination revealed epigastric and perium...
Ilio-psoas abscess (IPA) is rare in children and exceptional in the neonate. However, we recently managed two consecutive male neonates with right-sided IPA. The first baby was born two days after rupture of the membranes and had thick meconium-stained amniotic fluid. There was no such high risk factor in the second child. Diagnosis was made by ultrasonography in both the patients. Extraperiton...
We report a case of a 38-yearold woman who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and occasional fevers, five weeks after radical abdominal hysterectomy and pelvic node dissection for cervical carcinoma. After initial empirical antibiotic treatment failure, a decision was made to proceed with percutaneous drainage of a right psoas abscess. The antibiotic regimen was adjusted accordi...

CASE PRESENTATION A 72-year old Caucasian man with an osteoporotic compression fracture of the first lumbar vertebra after kyphopla...
Ultrasound examinations were done to evaluate clinically palpable abdominal masses in 125 children. The examinations were normal in 21 patients. In 15 patients, the clinically palpable masses were actually anterior abdominal wall abscesses or hematomas. Final diagnosis was available in 87 of 89 patients with intraabdominal masses detected on ultrasound. The majority (71%) were retroperitoneal m...
Case In rare cases, spinal epidural abscess involves the entire spine and can lead to neurological deficits and sepsis if treatment is delayed or suboptimal. A 65-year-old man was admitted with a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. After admission, magnetic resonance imaging showed a spinal epidural abscess from the cervical to lumbar spine. Blood culture revealed Staphylococcus aureus. The pati...
Primary retroperitoneal abscess complicated with septic arthritis of the hip is an unusual disease. The insidious and occult nature of abscess coexistent with arthritis causes diagnostic delays, prolonged sepsis, and considerably higher morbidity and mortality. We herein present a case of gouty arthritis and avascular necrosis of the femoral head in a 41-year-old woman who complained of fever, ...
