The initial suspicion that obesity increases coronary risk has been much sharpened with the demonstration that risk is more tightly linked to abdominal than to peripheral obesity, and tighter yet again when the mass of omental adipose tissue is taken into account. These data suggest that important metabolic differences might exist between adipocytes from different regions, and indeed, it has lo...

BACKGROUND Protein expression studies based on the two major intra-abdominal human fat depots, the subcutaneous and the omental fat, can shed light into the mechanisms involved in obesity and its co-morbidities. Here we address, for the first time, the identification and validation of reference proteins for data standardization, which are essential for accurate comparison of protein levels in e...

Primary omental torsion is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain, we report a case of 10-year-old boy admitted with crampy abdominal pain, routine laboratory tests and plain abdominal radiography was normal, the patient underwent surgical exploration with the initial diagnosis of appendicitis, primary omental torsion was confirmed and the omentum was untwisted, with good postoperative evolution.

Acute appendicitis is often simulated by other entities like mesenteric adenitis, worm infestation, Meckel's diverticulitis, urinary tract infection and rarely omental torsion. We report two cases, a 6 year old boy and an 11 year old girl, who presented with symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis but upon exploration turned out to be omental torsion.

The incidence of cystic lesions is about 1 per 140,000 general hospital admissions and about 1 per 20,000 pediatric hospital admissions. Most common presentation is abdominal distension. However, they may be an incidental fi nding or a painless abdominal mass and often mimicking ascites. The presentation...

Adipogenesis and lipid storage in human adipose tissue are inhibited by androgens such as DHT. Inactivation of DHT to 3α-diol is stimulated by glucocorticoids in human preadipocytes. We sought to characterize glucocorticoid-induced androgen inactivation in human preadipocytes and to establish its role in the antiadipogenic action of DHT. Subcutaneous and omental primary preadipocyte cultures we...
