We present the first measurement of the faint end of the QSO luminosity function at z = 3. The QSOs, which range from M1450 = −21 to M1450 = −27, were discovered in 17 fields totaling 0.43 deg using multicolor selection criteria (the Lyman break technique) and spectroscopic followup. We find that the faintend slope of the luminosity function is βl = 1.24± 0.07 (Φ ∝ L l), flatter than the value ...

A new, comprehensive study by an international team of scientists, including scientists at Boston University in the US and the Universities of Viçosa and Campinas in Brazil, has been published in the current issue of Science (August 26, 2011) refuting earlier alarmist claims that drought has induced a decline in global plant productivity during the past decade and posed a threat to global food ...
The accuracy of the prognostic, physically-based aerosol activation parameterization of Nenes and Seinfeld [2003] (NS) with modifications introduced by Fountoukis and Nenes [2004] (modified NS) is evaluated against extensive microphysical data sets collected on board the CIRPAS Twin Otter aircraft for cumuliform and stratiform clouds of marine and continental origin. The cumuliform cloud data w...

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the integration of automatic speech recognition (ASR) controls and spatial audio displays on soldier workload in noisy, cognitively demanding environments such as armored vehicles. To achieve this end, measures of mental workload were obtained in tasks in which subjects were instructed to give ASR voice commands in response to simulated ...
