Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections are uncommon complications in the haematopoietic stem cell post-transplant period. Most cases are reactivations of latent infections affecting the lung. We present an atypical case of isolated lymph node tuberculosis after an allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which highlights the importance of having a high suspicion index, even in non-en...

Significant resistance against influenza virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections was induced when trehalose dimycolate from M. tuberculosis or M. bovis but not M. avium was combined with muramyl dipeptide. Trehalose dimycolate from M. tuberculosis, in contrast to that from M. avium, could confer resistance against Toxoplasma gondii infections.

Complications of HIV disease remained a major focus at the 2017 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI), and included studies focused on noncommunicable chronic diseases (eg, cardiovascular disease, obesity, bone disease, and malignancies) and opportunistic infections (Mycobacterium tuberculosis and cryptococcosis). Progress in identifying predictors of specific complicat...

BACKGROUND Cellulitis caused by Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare has rarely been described. Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare is a rare cause of septic arthritis after intra-articular injection, though the causative role of injection is difficult to ascertain in such cases. CASE PRESENTATION A 57-year-old with rheumatoid arthritis treated with prednisone and azathioprine developed bilatera...

We report the case of a nonimmunocompromised female patient, who developed exogenous lipoid pneumonia with Mycobacterium fortuitum infection at diagnosis, later followed by Aspergillus fumigatus infection. The association of exogenous lipoid pneumonia with atypical mycobacterial infection is uncommon but well-recognized, but, to our knowledge, association with A. fumigatus infection has not pre...

Of 109 cases in England and Wales in which mycobacteria of the avian-Battey group were isolated from man 89 were considered genuine infections (including 32 with Mycobacterium avium) and six were doubtful. Almost half the significant cases were lung infections in men in dusty occupations, mostly coal miners with pneumoconiosis, and just over a quarter were non-pulmonary, mostly cervical adeniti...

Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii is an increasing cause of human pulmonary disease and infections of the skin and soft tissues. Consistent reports of human infections indicate that M. bolletii is a highly pathogenic, emerging species of rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM). Here we report the first whole-genome sequence of M. abscessus subsp. bolletii BD(T).

From February to October 2003, Mycobacterium goodii wound infections were identified among three patients who received surgical implants at a Colorado hospital. This report summarizes the investigation of the first reported nosocomial outbreak of M. goodii. Increased awareness is needed about the potential for nontuberculous mycobacteria to cause postoperative wound infections.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria are rare causes of skin, soft tissue, and musculoskeletal infections. Mycobacterium marinum remains one of the most commonly encountered mycobacterial species in humans, causing superficial cutaneous as well as deep infections. We are reporting a case of M. marinum osteomyelitis involving two primary noncontiguous sites in an immunocompetent host, which was successfu...

Recent outbreaks of human tuberculosis in the United States caused by Mycobacterium bovis have implicated cheese originating in Mexico as a source of these infections. A total of 203 samples of cheese originating in Mexico were cultured, and M. bovis was recovered from one specimen. Therefore, M. bovis can be recovered from cheese and may be a source of human infections.
