Recent developments of Baxter algebras have lead to applications to combinatorics, number theory and mathematical physics. We relate Baxter algebras to Stirling numbers of the first kind and the second kind, partitions and multinomial coefficients. This allows us to apply congruences from number theory to obtain congruences in Baxter algebras.
We introduce the notion of arithmetic progression blocks or m-AP-blocks of Zn, which can be represented as sequences of the form (x, x+m,x+2m, . . . , x+ (i−1)m) (mod n). Then we consider the problem of partitioning Zn into m-APblocks. We show that subject to a technical condition, the number of partitions of Zn into m-AP-blocks of a given type is independent of m, and is equal to the cyclic mu...
This paper considers inference from multinomial data and addresses the problem of choosing the strength of the Dirichlet prior under a meansquared error criterion. We compare the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) and the most commonly used Bayesian estimators obtained by assuming a prior Dirichlet distribution with “noninformative” prior parameters, that is, the parameters of the Dirichlet are...
An individual's intrinsic mode preference and responsiveness to level-of-service variables affects her or his travel mode choice for a trip. The mode preference and responsiveness will, in general, vary across individuals based on observed (to an analyst) and unobserved (to an analyst) individual characteristics. The current paper formulates a multinomial-logit based model of travel mode choice...
This paper describes our system created to detect stance in online discussions. The goal is to identify whether the author of a comment is in favor of the given target or against. Our approach is based on a maximum entropy classifier, which uses surface-level, sentiment and domain-specific features. The system was originally developed to detect stance in English tweets. We adapted it to process...
This paper explores the triangle of relationships among product, process and organizational innovation, examining the complementarities and substitutes between these forms of innovation. Drawing from a large pooled sample of French and UK manufacturing firms, it investigates if firms can find a beneficial interplay between forms of innovation. A first analysis through a trivariate probit and a ...
