Proteins of the same functional family (for example, kinases) may have significantly different lengths. It is an open question whether such variation in length is random or it appears as a response to some unknown evolutionary driving factors. The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate existence of factors affecting prokaryotic gene lengths. We believe that the ranking of genomes accordin...

Halophilic bacteria grow over an extended range of salt concentrations. Their metabolic patterns are distinct compared to their terrestrial counterparts and obligate halophiles. The possibility of rapid adjustment to changes in the external salt concentration makes them potential candidates for bioprocessing. Halophilic bacteria produce enzymes, metabolites, solutes, exopolysaccharides and pigm...

Reversible protein phosphorylation is the main mechanism of signal transduction that enables cells to rapidly respond to environmental changes by controlling the functional properties of proteins in response to external stimuli. However, whereas signal transduction is well studied in Eukaryotes and Bacteria, the knowledge in Archaea is still rather scarce. Archaea are special with regard to pro...

Raised levels of serum muscle enzyme activity are frequently seen following unaccustomed or prolonged strenuous exercise. Following particularly severe exercise, muscle enzyme levels can be extremely high and are occasionally associated with rhabdomyolysis. A case of rhabdomyolysis following a moderate degree of accustomed exercise in a fit young soldier is reported and discussed.

RESULTS At 9.1 4.2 years of follow-up, patients with moderate MAVD (n 1⁄4 251) had a mean age of 63 11 years, 73% were male, and 38% had bicuspid valve. AE occurred in 193 (77%) patients in this group, including symptom development (69%), aortic valve replacement (67%), and cardiac death (4%). Predictors of AE were older age (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.71 per decade; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.3...

Although the benefits and risks associated with moderate drinking have gained increasing attention in recent years from both researchers and the general public, no universal definition of moderate drinking exists. Most currently used definitions are based on a certain number of drinks consumed in a specific time period. Defining a “drink,” however, also is difficult because alcoholic beverages ...

We prove that the Moderate Deviation Principle (MDP) holds for the trajectory of a locally square integrable martingale with bounded jumps as soon as its quadratic covariation, properly scaled, converges in probability at an exponential rate. A consequence of this MDP is the tightness of the method of bounded martingale diierences in the regime of moderate deviations.

Haloarchaeal strains require high concentrations of NaCl for their growth, with optimum concentrations of 10-30%. They display a wide variety of morphology and physiology including pH range for growth. Many strains grow at neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and some only at alkaline pH. However, no strain has been reported to grow only in acidic pH conditions within the family Halobacteriaceae.In...
