We evaluate different prediction techniques to estimate future demand of resource usage in a computational market. Usage traces from the PlanetLab network are used to compare the prediction accuracy of models based on histograms, normal distribution approximation, maximum entropy, and autoregression theory. We particularly study the ability to predict the tail of the probability distribution in...
X dP dμ ln dP dμ dμ on a measure space (X,M, μ), does not qualify itself as an information measure (it is not a natural extension of the discrete case), maximum entropy (ME) prescriptions in the measure-theoretic case are consistent with that of discrete case. In this paper, we study the measure-theoretic definitions of generalized information measures and discuss the ME prescriptions. We prese...
In this study we illustrate a Maximum Entropy (ME) methodology for modeling incomplete information and learning from repeated samples. The basis for this method has its roots in information theory and builds on the classical maximum entropy work of Janes (1957). We illustrate the use of this approach, describe how to impose restrictions on the estimator, and how to examine the sensitivity of ME...
Ecosystem entropy production is predicted to increase along ecological succession and approach a state of maximum entropy production, but few studies have bridged the gap between theory and data. Here, we explore radiative entropy production in terrestrial ecosystems using measurements from 64 Free/Fair-Use sites in the FLUXNET database, including a successional chronosequence in the Duke Fores...
Entropy is a measure of the uncertainty associated with a variable whose value cannot be exactly predicated. In uncertainty theory, it has been quantified so far by logarithmic entropy. However, logarithmic entropy sometimes fails to measure the uncertainty. This paper will propose another type of entropy named sine entropy as a supplement, and explore its properties. After that, the maximum en...
The Principle of Maximum Entropy is often used to update probabilities due to evidence instead of performing Bayesian updating using Bayes’ Theorem, and its use often has efficacious results. However, in some circumstances the results seem unacceptable and unintuitive. This paper discusses some of these cases, and discusses how to identify some of the situations in which this principle should n...
Theories and Results: Generalizing fractional kinetics successfully modeling anomalous diffusion, a theory for describing the infection pathway of the virus over the cytoplasm is presented. The statistical property of the fluctuations of the anomalous-diffusion exponent is also discussed based on a maximum-entropy-principle approach. In addition, an issue regarding the continuum limit of the en...
It is possible to derive the maximum entropy principle from thermodynamic stability requirements. Using as a starting point the equilibrium probability distribution, currently used in non-extensive thermostatistics, it turns out that the relevant entropy function is Rényi’s α-entropy, and not Tsallis’ entropy.
Vertical soil moisture profiles based on the principle of maximum entropy (POME) were validated using field and model data and applied to guide an irrigation cycle over a maize field in north central Alabama (USA). The results demonstrate that a simple two-constraint entropy model under the assumption of a uniform initial soil moisture distribution can simulate most soil moisture profiles that ...
