The observation that concepts from quantum information has generated many alternative indicators of quantum phase transitions hints that quantum phase transitions possess operational significance with respect to the processing of quantum information. Yet, studies on whether such transitions lead to quantum phases that differ in their capacity to process information remain limited. Here we show ...

We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the uniformly frustrated three dimensional XY model, as a model for vortex line fluctuations in a high Tc superconductor in an external magnetic field. A density of vortex lines of f = 1/25 is considered. We find two sharp phase transitions. The low T superconducting phase is an ordered vortex line lattice. The high T normal phase is a vortex line liquid,...

We investigate the Cerium – isostructural phase transition by explicitly incorporating finite temperature mixing of the Ce nonmagnetic and magnetic states. Unique to our approach is the calculation of vibrational properties from phonon theory. The critical behavior of the transition is shown to be controlled by the configurational mixing entropy between the magnetic and nonmagnetic states. Our ...

The stability of magnetic states and the mechanism for magnetic transitions can be analyzed in terms of the shape of the energy surface, which gives the energy as a function of the angles determining the orientation of the magnetic moments. Minima on the energy surface correspond to stable or metastable magnetic states and can represent parallel, antiparallel or, more generally, non-collinear a...

The triangular lattice of S=1/2 spins with XXZ anisotropy is a ubiquitous model for various frustrated systems in different contexts. We determine the quantum phase diagram of the model in the plane of the anisotropy parameter and the magnetic field by means of a large-size cluster mean-field method with a scaling scheme. We find that quantum fluctuations break up the nontrivial continuous dege...

The paramagnetic fraction surviving at the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic phase transition in the spin-Peierls magnet CuGeO3 is found to increase with an external magnetic field. This effect is explained by the competition of the Zeeman interaction and of the exchange interaction of local antiferromagnetic clusters formed on the spin-gap background near impurities.

The excitation spectrum of a model magnetic system, LiHoF4, was studied with the use of neutron spectroscopy as the system was tuned to its quantum critical point by an applied magnetic field. The electronic mode softening expected for a quantum phase transition was forestalled by hyperfine coupling to the nuclear spins. We found that interactions with the nuclear spin bath controlled the lengt...

The low-energy theory of interacting electrons on graphene's two-dimensional honeycomb lattice is derived and discussed. In particular, the Hubbard model in the large-N limit is shown to have a semimetal-antiferromagnetic insulator quantum critical point in the universality class of the Gross-Neveu model. The same equivalence is conjectured to hold in the physical case N=2, and its consequences...

Replication and transcription are two important processes in living systems. To execute such processes, various proteins work far away from equilibrium in a staggered way. Motivated by this, aspects of hysteresis during unzipping of DNA under a periodic drive are studied. A steady-state phase diagram of a driven DNA is proposed which is experimentally verifiable. As a two-state system, we also ...

Magnetization processes of spin-1/2 layered triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAFs) under a magnetic field H are studied by means of a numerical cluster mean-field method with a scaling scheme. We find that small antiferromagnetic couplings between the layers give rise to several types of extra quantum phase transitions among different high-field coplanar phases. Especially, a field-induced...
