Lymphatic and venous systems work together to drain interstitial fluid and blood respectively. Data on lymphatic function in chronic venous insufficiency and in chronic venous ulcerations are discordant. Modification of lymphatic function in acute venous thrombosis have been never described. The aim of this study is to report the modifications of the function of the lymphatic system in acute ve...
Lacteals are lymphatic vessels located at the center of each intestinal villus and provide essential transport routes for lipids and other lipophilic molecules. However, it is unclear how absorbed molecules are transported through the lacteal. Here, we used reporter mice that express GFP under the control of the lymphatic-specific promoter Prox1 and a custom-built confocal microscope and perfor...
It is well documented that cells secrete exosomes, which can transfer biomolecules that impact recipient cells' functionality in a variety of physiologic and disease processes. The role of lymphatic drainage and transport of exosomes is as yet unknown, although the lymphatics play critical roles in immunity and exosomes are in the ideal size-range for lymphatic transport. Through in vivo near-i...
The importance of the blood- and lymph vessels in the transport of essential fluids, gases, macromolecules and cells in vertebrates warrants optimal insight into the regulatory mechanisms underlying their development. Mouse and zebrafish models of lymphatic development are instrumental for gene discovery and gene characterization but are challenging for certain aspects, e.g. no direct accessibi...
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C is necessary for lymphangiogenesis and holds potential for lymphangiogenic therapy in diseases lacking adequate lymphatic drainage. However, the ability of VEGF-C to enhance sustainable, functional lymphatic growth in adult tissues remains unclear. To address this, we evaluated VEGF-C overexpression in adult lymphangiogenesis in regenerating skin. We ...
Background Colon cancer staging and prognosis are factors related to nodal status. About 15–20% stage I or II patients develop local recurrences and distant metastases within 5 years despite surgery with curative intent. Sentinel lymph node mapping aims to facilitate staging, to identify any unusual mesenteric lymphatic drainage patterns and to select patients who might benefit from adjuvant ch...
Chylothorax is defined as accumulation of chyle-containing lymphatic fluid within the pleural space. Chylothorax is very rarely seen in hemodialysis patients. We report a case of a patient on hemodialysis who developed chylothorax secondary to left innominate vein stenosis, with other features of venous hypertension such as arm edema successfully treated with angioplasty and pigtail drainage.
