INTRODUCTION Quantifying years of potential life lost (YPLL) highlights childhood causes of mortality and provides a simple method to identify important causes of premature death. METHODS CDC analyzed data from the National Vital Statistics System multiple cause of death files for 2000-2009. RESULTS An average of 890YPLL were lost each year due to unintentional injuries for every 100,000 pe...
Depression is in the news! In this country the Defeat Depression Campaign (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 1993) launched by the Royal Colleges of Psychiatrists and of General Practitioners is both consensus driven and media directed; to this may be added the emergence of consensus statements on depression treatment elsewhere in the world. Suicide reduction as a national health outcome target (...
A pervasive criticism of hypertext systems is that users tend to lose their way. Although much work has been done to address this "lost in hyperspace" problem, it still remains unresolved, even accepted as an inevtaible feature. But using the "lost in hyperspace" problem as an example of usability problems, we argue usabilityproblems are not user problems. Once viewed like this, more appropriat...
Assuming the observed pulsar velocities to originate during asymmetric collapse of stellar cores, we compute the amplitude of gravitational waves emitted during type II and Ib supernova explosions and their detection rate from within a distance of 30 Mpc. At the rms-level of advanced laser interferometers h ≈ 10−22 at frequencies 300− 1000 Hz the expected rate is about 1 per year.
We calculate the cross section of the inverse beta decay process, νe + n → p + e, in a magnetic field which is much smaller than m2p/e. Using exact solutions of the Dirac equation in a constant magnetic field, we find that the cross section depends on the direction of the incident neutrino even when the initial neutron is assumed to be at rest. We discuss the implication of this result for puls...
Being disorientated or lost is one of the fundamental dif®culties which users experience when trying to navigate within hypertext systems. In this paper, two new metrics of lostness are described and applied. The new metrics focus on the effects of link-type and the accuracy of user's mental models of system structure. In a series of studies, the new metrics were compared with the only other pu...
OBJECTIVE To compare patient outcomes 1 year before and 1 year after enrollment in a comprehensive diabetes lower-extremity amputation prevention program. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Outcome data were obtained on 197 patients enrolled in the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Diabetes Foot Program, which provides foot care to a predominantly low-income African-American populati...
Abstract Based on a qualitative study the employability of workers without vocational qualification in five different industries, this article examines hiring practices labour market segment low-skilled jobs from sociology conventions perspective. In absence educational signals, employers use personal networks and trial workdays to reduce uncertainty regarding quality job applicants. However, p...
Sickness and non-work-related accidents in 1973 left the Nation’s workers with a short-term potential earnings loss of $20.9 billion. Cash benefits, largely through accident and sickness insurance and sick leave, replaced $7.2 billion or almost 35 percent of the loss. In 1973, even more than in previous years, inflation helped to push the income-loss and benefit levels above the levels a year e...
