My talk today follows in the tracks of fellow sangha members who’ve given us presentations on the convergence of scientific inquiry and the insights of traditional Buddhist precepts in the area of neurobiology and brain science. I want to explore the ways the theory of evolution that has provided a framework for all biological research during the last 150 years illuminates and is illuminated by...

This article examines the *Manasvi-nāgarāja-sūtra, a unique text in the raksạ̄ genre of Buddhist literature dating to the early centuries of the common era. In addition to exploring special features of the vocabulary and meaning of this text, the article places the *Manasvi-nāgarāja-sūtra in the wider context of Buddhist textual and ritual practice in the first, second and third centuries CE.
Our results validate the use of independent DFT predicted BE shifts for defect identification and constraining ambient pressure XPS observations for Me-Nx moieties in pyrolyzed carbon based ORR electrocatalysts. This supports the understanding of such catalysts as vacancy-and-substitution defects in a graphene-like matrix.
Although pili have long been recognized in Gram-negative pathogens as important virulence factors involved in adhesion and invasion, very little is known about extended surface organelles in Gram-positive pathogens. Here we report that Group A Streptococcus (GAS), a Gram-positive human-specific pathogen that causes pharyngitis, impetigo, invasive disease, necrotizing fasciitis, and autoimmune s...
The aim of this article is to explore an approach to “mindfulness” that lies outside of the usual Buddhist mainstream. This approach adopts a “non-dual” stance to meditation practice, and based on my limited experience and training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), this non-dual notion of “mindfulness” seems an especially appropriate point of comparison between MBSR and Buddhism. Th...
The most diffuse forms of meditation derive from Hinduism and Buddhism spiritual traditions. Different cognitive processes are set in place to reach these meditation states. According to an historical-philological hypothesis (Wynne, 2009) the two forms of meditation could be disentangled. While mindfulness is the focus of Buddhist meditation reached by focusing sustained attention on the body, ...
We present constraints on the mass of warm dark matter (WDM) particles derived from the Lyman-alpha flux power spectrum of 55 high-resolution HIRES spectra at 2.0 or approximately 1.2 keV (2sigma) if the WDM consists of early decoupled thermal relics and m(WDM) > or approximately 5.6 keV (2sigma) for sterile neutrinos. Adding th...
