We summarize the performance of the MAX experiment during its 5 years of operation and present a compilation of the results to date. We describe MAXIMA, a balloon borne experiment employing an array of detectors in the focal plane, that will provide sensitive measurements of the power spectrum between l ∼ 60 and l ∼ 650.

We consider in this paper the collection of near maxima of the discrete, two dimensional Gaussian free field in a box with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
