Fine metallic screens are important sub-systems in propellant tank systems of spacecrafts due to their application as filter devices. The flow resistance has to be known for a proper design of tank and feed line systems. In this paper the flow resistance of application-relevant metallic screens is investigated experimentally. The weave types “dutch twilled weave” (DTW) and “broad mesh” (BM) wer...

Following recent molecular studies on avocado thrips, a new species is described from Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Colombia from the young leaves of avocado, Persea americana. Scirtothrips hansoni sp.n. is closely related to the Californian pest, S. perseae, and also to S. astrictus from Costa Rica that remains known from a single female. An illustrated key to these three species is provided.

A brief history of the introduction of Shape's fibroma virus into the Australian rabbit scene, outlining some of the emotions generated and some of their causes is given. Immunisation of rabbits against myxomatosis using Shape's fibroma is still banned in Australia except in approved scientific'institutions. The arguments leading to this ban are examined and rejected. Options for future protect...

The carcinomas deriving from the papillomas induced with a virus in domestic rabbits (1) have this virus as their primary cause. The present paper is concerned with the carcinogenic effect of various strains of the virus,--meaning thereby the infective materials procured from the "spontaneous" papillomas of different cottontail rabbits,--and with the influence of the concentration of the inocul...

Recent studies on the dissolution of cartilage matrix by vitamin A in vivo and in vitro have indicated that the vitamin acts, at least in part, by releasing endogenous acid proteases from cartilage cells (1-5). Dingle (6) found that vitamin A alcohol in vitro liberated acid protease(s) from a particulate fraction of rat liver homogenized in 0.25 M sucrose. This fraction of tissue homogenates co...

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a plasma protein that mediates bidirectional transfers of cholesteryl esters and triglycerides between low-density lipoproteins and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Because low levels of plasma CETP are associated with increased plasma HDL-cholesterol, therapeutic inhibition of CETP activity is considered an attractive strategy for elevating plasma H...

The rabbit has been commonly used for experimental syphilis since Bertarelli (1906) first inoculated this species with Treponema pallidum. Three years earlier, Metchnikoff and Roux (1906) had succeeded in making the monkey the first animal successfully inoculated with the disease. However, but for isolated and notable exceptions (Neisser, 1906, 1908; Turner and Hollander, 1957), few subsequent ...

A new rabbit calicivirus related to the rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) was identified. The new virus contains significant differences from the previously characterized RHDV isolates in terms of pathogenicity, viral titer, tropism, and primary sequence of the structural protein. Cross-protection experiments, antigenic data, and sequence comparisons demonstrate that the new virus is more...

The ability of skin to support long lasting expression of genes delivered with a particle-mediated system was evaluated in rabbits inoculated with cottontail rabbit papillomavirus (CRPV) DNA. The optimal delivery force for maximal gene expression in rabbit skin was determined in transient beta-galactosidase assays. Forty-five sites in four rabbits were then inoculated at 350-400 p.s.i. with CRP...
