Purpose Recent studies have implicated low vitamin D levels with greater disease activity in pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and we have reported an association between low vitamin D levels and greater disease activity in juvenile dermatomyositis. The objective of this study was to explore whether standardized vitamin D supplementation of low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]...
Background CCR5 is expressed on Th1 cells and may play a role in Rheumatoid Arthritis by recruiting these cells to the synovium, where they drive an inflammatory process. The CCR5Δ32 variant, a deletion variant which leads to a dysfunctional receptor, has been reported in several genetic association studies in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), with conflicting results. CCL14 is one of the li...
OBJECTIVE We investigated ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin-like and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13) messenger RNA levels as a biomarker of disease features in systemic lupus erythematosus. METHODS We measured and compared messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of ADAMTS13 in peripheral blood cells in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and healthy control subjects by whole-gen...
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease. The most common hematologic finding is anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and secondary antiphospholipid syndrome with recurrent abortion and thrombosis. The autoimmune fibrosis of bone marrow is another manifestation of autoimmune disease especially SLE, that must be correctly differentiated from primary myelofibrosis.
Methotrexate nodulosis in conditions other than rheumatoid arthritis is very rare. It has been reported in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and Jaccoud’s arthropathy [4], a patient with juvenile arthritis who was rheumatoid factor negative [5], and a patient with psoriatic arthritis and negative rheumatoid factor [6]. Only the patient with juvenile arthritis had pulmonary nodules. Ho...
A case of Klinefelter's syndrome presenting with systemic lupus erythematosus while receiving androgen replacement therapy is described. The association of systemic lupus erythematosus with Klinefelter's syndrome is discussed, particularly in terms of the effect of sex hormones.
Predominant interstitial nephritis is a rare manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus. Only seven cases have been reported in the literature. Owing to the rarity of this entity, the natural history of predominant interstitial nephritis in lupus has not been adequately recorded and an appropriate therapeutic approach has yet to be defined. In this report we present the case of a 25 year old...
