We investigate the co-nonsolvency of poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNiPAM) in different water-alcohol mixtures and show that this phenomenon is due to two distinct solvation contributions governing the phase behavior of PNiPAM in the water-rich and alcohol-rich regime respectively. While hydrophobic hydration is the predominant contribution governing the phase behavior of PNiPAM in the water-ric...

New biocompatible temperature-responsive hydrogels have been obtained by using unprecedented low concentration of amyloid fibril-PNiPAM hybrids. The viscoelasticity of the hydrogels can be finely controlled by tuning the PNiPAM layers without changing the structure or concentration of the amyloid fibrils.

We have used neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements in combination with dynamic light scattering (DLS), surface tension and ellipsometry, to study the adsorption behaviour at the air/water interface of N-isopropylacrylamide-based nanogels as a function of concentration. The data provide clear evidence that the nanogels are adsorbed at the interface in a strongly deformed shape and forming a mul...

The release of the opioid antagonist naltrexone from neutral poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) microgels and negatively charged PNIPAAM microgels containing acrylic acid groups (PNIPAAM-co-PAA) has been studied at various microgel and drug concentrations. The release curves were found to be well represented by the Weibull equation. The release rates were observed to be dependent on the micr...

We present a theoretical model for the description of the adsorption kinetics of globular proteins onto charged core-shell microgel particles based on Dynamic Density Functional Theory (DDFT). This model builds on a previous description of protein adsorption thermodynamics [Yigit et al., Langmuir, 2012, 28], shown to well interpret the available calorimetric experimental data of binding isother...

Surfaces incorporating the antimicrobial enzyme, lysozyme, have been previously demonstrated to effectively disrupt bacterial cellular envelopes. As with any surface active antimicrobial, however, lysozyme-expressing surfaces become limited in their utility by the accumulation of dead bacteria and debris. Surfaces modified with environmentally responsive polymers, on the other hand, have been s...

Polystyrene (PS) microgel colloids have often been used successfully to model hard sphere behaviour even though the term "gel" invokes inevitably the notion of a more or less soft, deformable object. Here we systematically study the effect of reducing the cross-link density from 1 : 10 (1 cross-link per 10 monomers) to 1 : 100 on particle interactions and "softness". We report on the synthesis ...

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles have been proposed for many applications in biotechnology and medicine. In this paper, it is demonstrated how the excellent colloidal stability and magnetic properties of monodisperse and individually densely grafted iron oxide nanoparticles can be used to manipulate reversibly the solubility of nanoparticles with a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)nitrodopamine shell....

The smart thermoresponsive coatings and surfaces that have been explicitly designed for cell culture are mostly based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm). This polymer is characterized by a sudden precipitation on heating, switching from a hydrophilic to a hydrophobic state. Mammalian cells cultured on such thermoresponsive substrates can be recovered as confluent cell sheets, while keepin...
