A thin layer of a SU-8 submicrometer pattern produced by holographic lithography was directly used as the dry-etching mask in a chemically assisted ion-beam-etching system. With optimized etching parameters, etching selectivity of 7:1 was achieved together with a smooth vertical profile. As an application, a half-wavelength retardation plate for a 1.55-microm wavelength was produced and evaluated.

The survival, OER, and RBE for HeLa, leukemia, and kidney cells after irradiation with 14 MeV neutrons, pion beams, and heavy ion beams dispersed by ridge filters are calculated. Simple beam models and the delta-ray theory of cellular survival are used in the calculations, which refer to a mixed radiation environment and the potential application of these irradiation systems in radiotherapy.

A study of ion sculpting dynamics in SiO2 and SiN using periodically pulsed ion beams reveals material transport that depends strongly on the time structure of the pulsed beams. It is found that significant nanoscale matter transport can occur over second long time scales after the ion beam has been extinguished. A simple phenomenological model described the dynamics of ion beam sculpting in te...

We present the results of a detailed study on the acceleration of intense ion beams by relativistic laser plasmas. The experiments were performed at the 100 TW laser at the Laboratoire pour L’Utilisation des Lasers Intenses (LULI). We investigated the dependence of the ion beams on the target conditions based on theoretical predictions by the target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) mechanism. ...

The clinical application of the flattening filter-free photon beam (FFF) has enjoyed greater use due to its advantage of reduced treatment time because of the increased dose rate. Its unique beam characteristics, along with the very high-dose rate, require a thorough knowledge of the capability and accuracy in FFF beam modeling, planning, and delivery. This work verifies the feasibility of mode...

The ionization of residual gas by an electron beam in an accelerator generates ions that can resonantly couple to the beam through a wave propagating in the beam-ion system. A beam-ion instability is studied for a multi-bunch train taking into account the decoherence of ion oscillations due to the ion frequency spread. It is shown that while the decoherence does not completely suppress the inst...

A proposed high-brightness synchrotron light source (PEP-X) is under design at SLAC. The 4.5-GeV PEP-X storage ring has four theoretical minimum emittance (TME) cells to achieve the very low emittance and two double-bend achromat (DBA) cells to provide spaces for IDs. Damping wigglers will be installed in zero-dispersion straights to reduce the emittance below 0.1 nm. Ion induced beam instabili...

Ion beam modification to effect ion beam mixing without changing morphology was investigated as a means to improve the electrochemical performance of Ge thin film electrodes for rechargeable Li batteries. As a result of a minimum tenfold increase in the strength of adhesion of the Ge film to the current collector (substrate), the ion beam-mixed electrodes exhibited stable specific capacities of...

During the past two years, the U.S. heavy ion fusion science program has made significant experimental and theoretical progress in simultaneous transverse and longitudinal beam compression, ion-beam-driven warm dense matter targets, high brightness beam transport, advanced theory and numerical simulations, and heavy ion target designs for fusion. First experiments combining radial and longitudi...

An laser ion source which produces bunched ion beam is proposed to enhance an acceleration efficiency of ion accelerator front end with RFQ linac. To demonstrate a production of an initially bunched ion beam, H2 gas was ionized by short pulse laser in an RF electric field. As a result, ions captured by the RF field were observed by an ion probe.
