A 53-year-old man presented with an open fracture of the pisiform after a fall on his left wrist. Treatment of the patient presented a dilemma between excision of the proximal fragment and internal fixation. The patient underwent internal fixation with a 2.5 cortical screw. At 6 months follow-up the fracture appeared fully consolidated with full functional recovery of the wrist.
displaced fracture of the acromion without associated shoulder injury occurs rarely. a 31-year-old gentleman presented with an isolated acromion fracture resulting from a direct trauma to the top of his left shoulder. open reduction and internal fixation using multiple pins was performed and the fracture was closed without complications. the patient achieved excellent shoulder function and rank...
BACKGROUND The tibial pilon fractures represent a complex therapeutic problem for the orthopedic surgeon, given the frequent complications and outcomes disabling. The recent medical literature indicates that the best strategy to reduce amount of complications in tibial pilon fractures is two-stages procedure. We describe our experience in the primary stabilization of these fractures. METHODS ...
The cause of postoperative failure after the treatment of femoral intertrochanteric fracture with proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) was analyzed, and the reoperative methods were examined. Nine failures of 308 femoral intertrochanteric fracture patients with PFNA were treated with femoral prosthesis total hip replacement (THR) and reoperative internal fixation. All nine patients were an...
PURPOSE To compare the clinical and radiological results between internal fixation using the proximal femoral nail system and bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) in reverse oblique intertrochanteric hip fractures in elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 2005 to July 2012, we reviewed the medical records of 53 patients who had been treated surgically for reverse oblique intertrochant...
Introduction: Complex pelvic fracture, which has a very high mortality and even higher morbidity, needs internal fixation surgery as an integral part for its management. It was necessary to conduct a study regarding outcome of complex pelvic fractures after internal fixation surgery. Material & Method: Twenty-six patients with complex pelvic fractures that had been treated with internal fixatio...
BACKGROUND Subcapital femoral neck is known to cause many complications, such as avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head or nonunion, compared with other femoral neck fractures. The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of AVN and fixation failures in patients treated with internal fixation using cannulated screws for the subcapital femoral neck fractures. METHODS This study...
Diaphyseal fractures of the third metacarpal (MCIII) or metatarsal (MTIII) bones are not common in horses, although they are seen regularly in equine athletes. These fractures are as many as one third of all long-bone fractures in the horse. Treatment options for MCIII/MTIII fractures include internal fixation, external coaptation, and a combination of the two. The most stable treatment method ...
This study was designed to evaluate trends in incidence and treatment patterns for intracapsular hip fractures and to evaluate risk factors for complications and mortality. Patients with an intracapsular hip fracture who underwent internal fixation, hemiarthroplasty, or total hip arthroplasty (THA) were identified from a 5% nationwide sample of Medicare data (1998-2007). The authors identified ...
