Amylase transcription in the human salivary gland results from the evolutionary juxtaposition of two inserted elements, a gamma-actin pseudogene and an endogenous retrovirus, to create an unusual salivary-specific promoter. We utilized these structures as molecular tags to characterize the amylase genes in extant primates by polymerase chain reaction amplification of promoter fragments from gen...

AIM To determine the usefulness of measuring amylase activity as an indicator of pancreatic disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients. METHODS A prospective study of 129 ambulant HIV positive males. Total amylase, pancreatic amylase, and lipase activities were assayed using commercial test kits on an automated analyser. Samples with raised amylase were examined for the p...

BACKGROUND & AIM Alpha-amylase in both blood and saliva has been used as a diagnostic parameter. While studies examining alpha-amylase activity in saliva have shown that it is sensitive to physiological and psychological challenge of the adrenergic system, no challenge studies have attempted to elucidate the role of the adrenergic system in alpha-amylase activity in blood. We set out to examine...

Pancreatic and salivary amylase/creatinine clearance ratios in patients with various degrees of renal impairment were compared with those obtained for control subjects. In chronic renal insufficiency (mean GFR 30 ml/min +/- 15 SD; n = 13) the clearance ratios for pancreatic (mean 3.5 +/- 1.85 SD) and salivary (mean 2.3 +/- 1.3 SD) amylase were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than those ...

The flux of alpha-amylase (1,4-alpha-D-glucan glucanohydrolase; EC 3.2.1.1) across the basolateral membrane of the acinar cell was measured in the cell-to-bath direction using the whole rabbit pancreas in organ culture. This in vitro preparation is polarized so that apical and basolateral secretions can be collected separately. The unstimulated amylase flux from cell to bath was substantial at ...

The cloning of a-amylase gene of S . occidentalis and the construction of starch digestible strain of yeast, S . cerevisiae AS. 2.1364 with ethanol-tolerance and without auxotrophic markers used in fermentation industry were studied. The yeast/E . coli shuttle plasmid YCEpl partial library of S. occidentalis DNA was constructed and a-amylase gene was screened in S. cerevisiae by amylolytic acti...

We report the presence of an extremely high proportion of "aged" amylase in the serum and cyst fluid of a patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst. A salivary amylase inhibitor test helped us to differentiate these "aged" pancreatic amylases from salivary fractions having a similar electrophoretic mobility.

Th e paper presents numerical comparison of two methods of estimation of nonallelic interaction of QTL eff ects. In the fi rst method we assume that we observe only the plant phenotype, while in the second method we have additional information from the molecular markers observations. In this paper we analysed phenotypic data on 120 barley doubled haploid lines, derived from cross Clipper × Saha...

Previous studies have shown that amylase levels are reduced significantly in the pancreas and parotid gland of diabetic rats and that insulin reverses this effect and increases the secretory protein levels. In the pancreas, these changes in amylase protein levels are accompanied by parallel changes in amylase mRNA levels. In the present study, the effects of diabetes and subsequent insulin trea...

We report a case of primary bronchogenic adenocarcinoma, complicated by pleural effusion, in which very high pleural amylase activity was found, whilst serum amylase was normal. Isoamylase determination showed a salivary-type amylase. Concerning the origin of this enzyme, ultrastructural study of the malignant cells obtained from the pleural fluid suggested a local amylase synthesis. The pathop...
