An avian paramyxovirus 6 strain was isolated during a wild bird monitoring study in Kazakhstan in 2013. The virus was isolated from a wild duck red-crested pochard (Netta rufina) in southeastern Kazakhstan. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of the virus.

Conservation breeding programs for the flagship species, the Wyoming toad (Bufo baxteri), Boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), Puerto Rican crested toad (Peltophryne lemur), and Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) are either completely or largely dependent on hormonal induction. Commercial production of African clawed toads (Xenopus spp.) and also numerous other species rely on hormonal ...

The reproductive tract of the male Cape porcupine is morphologically and histologically similar to that of New World hystricomorph rodents. Males are reproductively active throughout the year and attained sexual maturity (complete spermatogenesis) at an age of 8-18 months. Testes weight, epididymides weight and seminiferous tubule diameter attained asymptotic values at the age of 23-30 months. ...

A Brazilian Porcupine, Coendou prehensilis (Linnaeus, 1758), was encountered and photographed at night on a recently cleared forest path in Presidente Hayes Department, Paraguay. Although C. is widespread has been reported from variety of ecoregions habitats, this record western Paraguay the first South American Humid Chaco ecoregion.

The results from a time series study (1989 to 2005) at a depth of 4850m on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, NE Atlantic, are presented showing radical changes in the density of large invertebrates (megafauna) over time. Major changes occurred in a number of different taxa between 1996 and 1999 and then again in 2002. One species of holothurian, Amperima rosea, was particularly important, increasing...

Crested wheatgrass [Agropyron cristatum L. (Gaertn.)] is widely used for early spring grazing in western Canada and the development of late maturing cultivars which maintain forage quality for a longer period is desired. However, it is difficult to manipulate the timing of floral transition, as little is known about molecular mechanism of plant maturity in this species. In this study, RNA-Seq a...

Twenty-four polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for the double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus). The number of alleles ranged from two to 13 and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.032 to 0.871. The use of these loci should enable researchers and biologists to learn more about the population structure and ecology of this species.

Evolutionary biologist Michael Shapiro and his team made international headlines in 2013 when they found that a prominent change in pigeon plumage, head crests, could be traced to a mutation in a single gene. Now, in the new advanced online edition of Molecular Biology and Evolution (Vickrey et al. 2015), the research team has found an almost exact repeat in the evolutionary playbook. A mutatio...
