We have found immunoglobulin (Ig) G-containing material consistent with immune complexes in the sera of patients with Lyme arthritis. It was detected in 29 of 55 sera (55%) from 31 patients by at least one of three assays: (125)I-C1q binding, C1q solid phase, or Raji cell. The presence of reactive material correlated with clinical aspects of disease activity; it was found early in the illness, ...

Immunization studies with modified gp120 monomers using a hyperglycosylation strategy, in which undesired epitopes are masked by the selective incorporation of N-linked glycans, were described in a previous paper (Selvarajah S, et al., J Virol 2000;79:12148-12163). In this report, we applied the hyperglycosylation strategy to soluble uncleaved gp140 trimers to improve the antigenic and immunoge...

Two strains of an antigenically intermediate human adenovirus were isolated from eye specimens from cases of conjunctivitis. The viruses were doubly neutralized by antisera to adenoviruses 15 and 29 but possessed the hemagglutinins of adenovirus 8 or 9.

To distinguish and define the differentiative and communicative relations of Ly123 and Ly1 cells in generating specific helper-effector (HE) (Ly1:HE) and specific suppression-inducing (SI) (Ly1:SI) cells, these two functional sets were generated from various combinations of congenic genetically marked sets of cortisone-resistant nylon-purified thymocytes (CRNPT) by culture on antigen-primed mac...

Guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins) are heterotrimeric proteins that transduce extracellular signals into intracellular changes. Functionally different G proteins have been identified by their different alpha subunits. The beta and gamma subunits have been assumed to constitute a common pool shared among various G protein heterotrimers. Two gamma subunits (gamma 3 and ga...

The capacity of rabbit anti-egg albumin sera to sensitize human skin has been studied. It has been shown that passive transfer by these sera is completely unrelated to the egg albumin-anti-egg albumin system, as demonstrated by a failure of passive transfer by some antisera containing ample anti-egg albumin and persistence of passive transfer in other antisera from which all anti-egg albumin ha...

We compared two Campylobacter serotyping systems by using 1,405 isolates of Campylobacter collected from human, animal, and environmental sources during epidemiologic investigations and special studies. We found 96.1% of isolates to be typable by the Penner method for heat-stable antigens, which involved the use of an indirect hemagglutination technique, and 92.1% of isolates to be typable by t...

Ten samples of antiserum against Pseudomonas cepacia were prepared by the intravenous immunization of rabbits with heat-killed organisms. Ten P. cepacia strains used for immunization were proven unique antigenic strains. Using these antisera, we serogrouped 127 strains of P. cepacia, and 114 strains (89.8%) fell under one of the ten serogroup. The most prevalent serogroup was C (26.8), the seco...

Antisera to triiodothyronine were shown to contain large quantities of the hormone, well in excess of normal circulating concentrations. Extracting the triiodothyronine from the antiserum with alkaline ethanol yielded an antibody of increased affinity. Use of this antibody in a radioimmunoassay resulted in a fourfold increase in sensitivity as compared with the unextracted material.

During the first 6 months of 1978, 114 strains of Neisseria meningitidis isolated from patients in Norway were serotyped. Among 27 group C strains, type 2 was most common, whereas 82% of the 82 group B isolates did not react with antisera to the standard serotypes 1 to 12. These strains were shown to belong to a new serotype, type 15. Also some group A and C strains had the type 15 antigen. Inv...
