We report a patient with pain, abdominal palpable mass and a history of previous open renal stone surgery.  Imaging studies showed a right pelvic kidney with multiple calyceal stones. We describe the successful management through laparoscopic assisted percutaneous nephrolithotomy with ultrasonography (PCNL) in ectopic pelvic kidney, stressing that this method is a minimally invasive therapeutic...

Multiphoton microscopy has been added to the array of imaging techniques at the endstation for the Microbeam II cell irradiator at Columbia University's Radiological Research Accelerator Facility (RARAF). This three-dimensional (3D), laser-scanning microscope functions through multiphoton excitation, providing an enhanced imaging routine during radiation experiments with tissuelike samples, suc...

Population counts of aquatic insects are a valuable tool for monitoring the water quality of rivers and streams. However, the handling of samples in the lab for species identification is time consuming and requires specially trained experts. An aquatic insect imaging system was designed as part of a system to automate aquatic insect classification and was tested using several species and size c...

We describe a scanning mirage microscope system that uses a diode probe laser. The sample is raster scanned using X-Y motorised microstepping stages under an Ar+ pump beam to give two dimensional scans and depth profiles. The results for a test sample are given and are compared to that obtained by scanning using a conventional large photoacoustic (PA) cell.

A noninvasive system capable of quantifying both the position and concentration of the major constituents of human skin along with the internal architecture is presented. Input to the system is in the form of two infrared and one colour image which, through an understanding of the physics relating the light remitted by human skin to its internal structure, provides information about this intern...

of soil were evaluated. The current study will describe the imaging system and present preliminary images produced from data collected from a soil phantom. W e have built the imaging system, which incorporates a single element source transducer and a receiver array, both obtained from the Applied Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. The source and receiver array are moved toget...

We describe a differential photoacoustic (PA) imaging system in which almost equal intensity beams modulated 180' out of phase illuminate two regions of a sample in a PA cell. For two regions that are both optically and thermally similar and also homogeneous, the resulting signal is almost zero but if one region has a sub-surface defect this will give an increased signal. This differential sign...

Introduction: The limited resolution of the imaging system causes partial volume effects (PVEs). These results in spreading of image counts to the neighboring pixels. This phenomenon is called spill-out effect. This study aimed at quantifying PVEs using ImageJ. Methods:Technetium-99m solution of concentration of 74 kBq/ml was filled into spheres A, B<...

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, demyelinating, neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) of unknown etiology. Isolated oculomotor nerve palsy is found rarely in children with MS. We present a case of MS in 10-year-old boy, who had bilateral ptosis associated with medial gaze restriction. The extraocular muscle examination demonstrated bilateral adduction pa...

The use of quantum dots (QDots) as bright and photostable probes for long-term fluorescence imaging is gaining more interest. Thus far, (pre)clinical use of QDots remains limited, which is primarily caused by the potential toxicity of QDots. Most QDots consist of Cd2+ ions, which are known to cause high levels of toxicity. Therefore, the cytotoxic effects of CdSe quantum dots on embryonic devel...
