Generic algebraic libraries run the risk of losing eeciency compared to non-generic libraries. To solve the seeming antagonism between genericity and eeciency, we propose a technique which we call lifting. The lifting process is an abstraction process which starts with a well-known eecient algorithm and abstracts carefully from it. As lifting guarantees that fast non-generic algorithms instanti...

Lifting is a procedure for deriving valid inequalities formixed-integer sets from valid inequalities for suitable restrictions of those sets. Lifting has been shown to be very effective in developing strong valid inequalities for linear integer programming and it has been successfully used to solve such problems with branch-and-cut algorithms. Here we generalize the theory of lifting to conic i...

A computer driven technique to analyze lifting forces, in non-homogeneous load situations, is described and tested. Analysis is based on a dynamic algorithm aimed to evaluate unconstrained lifting posture and non-homogeneous content of loads. For inputs we use actual geometrical body postures in the form of 3-dimensional co-ordinates obtained from pictures taken at a work site. The outputs show...

Let $R$ be a ring, $sigma$ be an endomorphism of $R$ and $M_R$ be a $sigma$-rigid module. A module $M_R$ is called quasi-Baer if the right annihilator of a principal submodule of $R$ is generated by an idempotent. It is shown that an $R$-module $M_R$ is a quasi-Baer module if and only if $M[[x]]$ is a quasi-Baer module over the skew power series ring $R[[x,sigma]]$.

In this paper we study the module contractibility ofBanach algebras and characterize them in terms the conceptssplitting and admissibility of short exact sequences. Also weinvestigate module contractibility of Banach algebras with theconcept of the module diagonal.

abstract. let (r,p) be a noetherian unique factorization do-main (ufd) and m be a finitely generated r-module. let i(m)be the first nonzero fitting ideal of m and the order of m, denotedord_r(m), be the largest integer n such that i(m) ⊆ p^n. in thispaper, we show that if m is a module of order one, then either mis isomorphic with direct sum of a free module and a cyclic moduleor m is isomorphi...

We say that a two dimensional p-adic Galois representation GF → GL2(Qp) of a number field F is weight two if it is de Rham with Hodge-Tate weights 0 and −1 equally distributed at each place above p; for example, the Tate module of an elliptic curve has this property. The purpose of this paper is to establish a variety of results concerning odd weight two representations of totally real fields i...

The objective of this work is to enhance the mobility of small mobile robots by enabling them to link into a train configuration capable of crossing relatively large obstacles. In particular, we are building on Millibots, semiautonomous, tracked mobile sensing/communication platforms at the 5-cm scale previously developed at Carnegie Mellon University. The Millibot Train concept provides couple...

The lifting task is the major activity contributing to the risk of lower back injur}. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanical stresses on the lower back during manual lifting and to analxze how people adapt to the stresses. This purpose was accomplished by approaching the mechanical stresses on the lower back from three different perspectives. The effects of manual lifting tasks...

We developed an evidence-based practice guideline to support occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals in assessing the risk due to lifting and in selecting effective preventive measures for low back pain (LBP) in the Netherlands. The guideline was developed at the request of the Dutch government by a project team of experts and OSH professionals in lifting and work-related LBP. The re...
