Germinal matrix-intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is the most common variety of neonatal intracranial hemorrhage and is characteristics of the premature infant. The importance of the lesion relates not only to its high incidence but to their attendant complications (IC: hydrocephalus). Brain sonography is the procedure of choice in diagnosis of germinal matrix- intraventricular hemorrhage and h...
According to the classical hypothesis of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hydrodynamics, CSF is produced inside the brain ventricles, than it circulates like a slow river toward the cortical subarachnoid space, and finally it is absorbed into the venous sinuses. Some pathological conditions, primarily hydrocephalus, have also been interpreted based on this hypothesis. The development of hydrocepha...
INTRODUCTION Aqueductal stenosis may be caused by a number of etiologies including congenital stenosis, tumor, inflammation, and, very rarely, vascular malformation. However, aqueductal stenosis caused by a developmental venous anomaly presenting as congenital hydrocephalus is even more rare, and, to the best of our knowledge, has not yet been reported in the literature. In this study, we revie...
CSF normally flows back and forth through the aqueduct during the cardiac cycle. During systole, the brain and intracranial vasculature expand and compress the lateral and third ventricles, forcing CSF craniocaudad. During diastole, they contract and flow through the aqueduct reverses. Hyperdynamic CSF flow through the aqueduct is seen when there is ventricular enlargement without cerebral atro...
OBJECTIVE To determine the success rate of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for treating obstructive hydrocephalus. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional observational study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY The Neurosurgery Department of PGMI, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, from May 2010 to November 2011. METHODOLOGY Patients with obstructive hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis, tectal an...
OBJECTIVE To verify whether Down's syndrome and neural tube defects arise more often in the same family than expected by chance. DESIGN Population and familial survey. SETTING Network of maternity hospitals in the Latin American collaborative study of congenital malformations (ECLAMC) in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela between 198...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the correlation between the distance of craniectomy from the midline and hydrocephalus after DC. METHODS The following electronic databases were searched from their inception to June 2015: Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Science Direct, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar, the Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). All randomiz...
Hydrocephalus is a condition characterised by enlarged cerebral ventricles, which in turn affects intracranial pressure (ICP); however, the mechanisms regulating ICP are not fully understood. A nonlinear signal processing approach was applied to ICP signals measured during infusion studies from patients with two forms of hydrocephalus, in a bid to compare the differences. This is the first stud...
AIM To assess the effectiveness and safety of pre-resection endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) in permanently relieving hydrocephalus in children with posterior fossa tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS 17 pediatric patients with posterior fossa tumors and associated triventricular obstructive hydrocephalus underwent ETV before definitive tumor resection, and ETV was repeated after tumor resecti...
The relationship between neurovirulence and induction of hydrocephalus was investigated for a measles virus temperature-sensitive mutant and its revertant. The revertant regained the neurovirulence of the parental strain. At appropriate doses the parental, mutant, and revertant strains induced hydrocephalus.
