We consider a high dimensional regression model with a possible change point due to a covariate threshold and develop the lasso estimator of regression coefficients as well as the threshold parameter. Our lasso estimator not only selects covariates but also selects a model between linear and threshold regression models. Under a sparsity assumption, we derive non-asymptotic oracle inequalities f...

International pressure to ban trophy hunting is increasing. However, we argue that trophy hunting can be an important conservation tool, provided it can be done in a controlled manner to benefit biodiversity conservation and local people. Where political and governance structures are adequate, trophy hunting can help address the ongoing loss of species.

This paper performs site specific measurements which is essential for path loss prediction. The paper studies path loss and derive a statistical path loss model for deployed WiMAX network operating at a frequency of 2.3 GHz over a range of 100m to 3km. This work offers propagation measurements in a frequency range that is globally being allocated for broadband wireless systems. Keywords—Path lo...

Psychophysical studies suggest that humans preferentially use a narrow band of low spatial frequencies for face recognition. Here we asked whether artificial face recognition systems have an improved recognition performance at the same spatial frequencies as humans. To this end, we estimated recognition performance over a large database of face images by computing three discriminability measure...

It is demonstrated that high spatial frequency filtering of time domain fluorescence signals can allow efficient detection of intrinsic fluorescence lifetimes from turbid media and the rejection of diffuse excitation leakage. The basis of this approach is the separation of diffuse fluorescence signals into diffuse and fluorescent components with distinct spatiotemporal behavior.

The charge-coupled devices used in electron microscopy are coated with a scintillating crystal that gives rise to a severe modulation transfer function (MTF). Exact knowledge of the MTF is imperative for a good correspondence between image simulation and experiment. We present a practical method to measure the MTF above the Nyquist frequency from the beam blocker's shadow image. The image proce...

Two experiments investigated the role of spatial frequency in performance of a figure/ground segregation task based on temporal cues. Figure orientation was much easier to judge when figure and ground portions of the target were defined exclusively by random texture composed entirely of high spatial frequencies. When target components were defined by low spatial frequencies only, the task was n...

We recorded the responses of single macaque striate cortical cells to color-varying and luminance-varying patterns. We show that (a) the vast majority of primate striate cells respond to pure color stimuli, in addition to responding to luminance-varying stimuli (b) in general, simple cells are color-selective whereas complex cells respond to multiple color regions, (c) most cortical cells show ...
