We present a case of a 14-year-old previously healthy boy with acute hepatotoxicity after noni berry juice consumption. As the popularity of noni berry consumption continues to increase, heightened awareness of the relation between noni berry consumption and acute hepatotoxicity is important.

The fixed-dose combination of Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir is a first-line agent for the treatment of HIV; however few cases have reported hepatotoxicity associated with the drug. We report a case of Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir-associated hepatotoxicity presenting mainly with hepatocellular injury characterized by extremely elevated aminotransferase levels, which resolved without acu...

For the development of novel hepatoprotective agents, C11, C28, C2,3,23 or C2,23,28 functional groups on asiatic acid were modified, and their hepatoprotective effects were evaluated. Most of the prepared compounds displayed potent hepatoprotective activities against CCl4and galactosamine (GaIN)-induced hepatotoxicity. Especially, compounds 16 and 20 showed the most significant hepatoprotective...

BACKGROUND Spontaneous reporting systems for adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are handicapped by under-reporting and limited detail on individual cases. We report an investigation from a local surveillance for serious adverse drug reactions associated with disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs that was triggered by the occurrence of liver failure in two of our patients. METHODS Serious ADR repo...

OBJECTIVE To determine the age-related risk of hepatotoxicity under currently recommended treatment regimens for latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI). METHODS A systematic review of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases (from database inception to 2008) was performed to determine the risk of isoniazid (INH) and/or rifampicin hepatotoxicity in LTBI treatment stratified by patient age. Study se...

This nested case-control study examined relationships between MDR1, CYP2B6, and CYP3A4 variants and hepatotoxicity during antiretroviral therapy with either efavirenz- or nevirapine-containing regimens. Decreased risk of hepatotoxicity was associated with MDR1 3435C-->T (odds ratio, 0.254; P=.021). An interaction between MDR1 and hepatitis B surface antigen status predicted risk with 82% accura...

Two patients with rheumatoid arthritis developed evidence of hepatotoxicity while receiving D-penicillamine. Both recovered after withdrawal of the drug. These cases and a review of the literature suggested that hepatotoxicity, though rare, should be added to the list of adverse reactions to D-penicillamine.

BACKGROUND Challenges exist in the clinical diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) and in obtaining information on hepatotoxicity in humans. OBJECTIVE (i) To develop a unified list that combines drugs incriminated in well vetted or adjudicated DILI cases from many recognized sources and drugs that have been subjected to serious regulatory actions due to hepatotoxicity; and (ii) to supp...
