OBJECTIVE To determine whether plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels are associated with clinical characteristics, neuropsychological and psychiatric manifestations and cardiovascular comorbidity in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). BACKGROUND Elevated Hcy levels are linked to atherosclerosis, vascular disease, depression, and dementia. Patients with PD treated with L-dopa have been shown to h...
AIM Several studies suggest that coal miners are under risk of severe health problems such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, renal, hematological and musculoskeletal disorders. However, there are limited data on biochemical changes in underground workers. In our study we aimed to evaluate the association between serum homocysteine (Hcy), vitamin B12, cystatin C and folate levels in th...
BACKGROUND Hyperhomocysteinemia is an important and independent risk factor for vascular disease. About 35% of patients with stroke and 47% of patients with peripheral arterial disease have elevated plasma homocysteine (HCY) concentrations. The relationship between plasma HCY and the methylentetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism is still unclear, especially in regard to screenin...
Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected for 2 weeks to daily injections of homocysteine (Hcy), which increased plasma Hcy approximately 2-fold. Echocardiography indicated significant increases in left ventricular diastolic (13%) and systolic (31%) dimensions and decreases in posterior wall thickness (diastolic, -17%; systolic, -20%) in Hcy-treated animals. Slight changes were noted in the eject...
The use of omonasteine (Omo) in sequential peptide ligation strategies extends the scope of homocysteine (Hcy) ligation to longer, methionine-rich proteins. Hcy-to-Omo conversion can be performed on-resin, while the Omo-to-Hcy deprotection can be performed in situ after peptide ligation. This strategy was successfully applied in the synthesis of the BRD7 bromodomain.
Objective(s): Incidence of neurocognitive and psychological disorders may be related to serum homocystein (Hcy), cobalamin (vitamin B12 ) and folate levels in old people. The aim of this study was to assess the relation between Hcy, cobalamin, folate and neurocognitive and/or psychological disorders in the elderly. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 280 subjects with ...
OBJECTIVE We aimed to examine whether baseline homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations affect antihypertensive responses to enalapril treatment among previously untreated hypertensive patients (n=10 783) in the CSPPT (China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial). APPROACH AND RESULTS After a 3-week run-in treatment with a daily dose of 10 mg enalapril, eligible hypertensive patients were randomly assigne...
OBJECTIVE Investigate the role of homocysteine (Hcy), Th17-related cytokines, and adhesion molecules in the inflammatory state seen in the sickle cell anemia (SCA). METHODS We studied the Hcy, interleukin (IL)-17, and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) cytokine levels of 62 SCA patients, as well as the expression levels of inflammatory and endothelial activation markers. RESULTS We found ...
Objective: The present study aimed to examine the relationship among homocysteine (Hcy), inflammation, and muscle strength.
BACKGROUND Folate plays a pivotal role in DNA synthesis, repair, methylation and homocysteine (Hcy) metabolism. Therefore, alterations in the folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism may lead to abnormal methylation proliferation, increases of tumor/neoplasia and vein thrombosis/cardiovascular risk. The serine hydroxymethyhransferase (SHMT), methionine synthase (MS), methionine synthase reductase ...
