Carbamazepine has recently been shown to have a vasopressin-like action and, like chlorpropamnide, to be effective in controlling polyuria in patients with diabetes insipidus (Hartman, 1972; Uhlich et al., 1972). In the case reported here carbamazepine, which was being given to a patient suffering from depression and psychogenic polydipsia, induced inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormon...

We present an exact treatment of wave propagation in some inhomogeneous thin films with highly spacedependent dielectric constant. It is based on a space transformation which replaces the physical space by the optical path. In the new space, the dispersion equation is that of a normal progressive wave. We will show that the dispersion properties of such films are plasmaor waveguide-like, the ch...

Tunneling without distortion is not a propagation phenomenon but a quasistatic process in which the slowly varying envelope of the input pulse modulates the amplitude of a standing wave in the barrier. Because the envelope has a bandwidth that is small compared to the cutoff frequency of the barrier it does not propagate; it merely stands and waves. The envelope of the reflected and transmitted...

With the recent rediscovery of slowand fast-light effects, there has been much interest in pulse propagation phenomena that lead to apparently superluminal pulse transmission. This raises immediate questions about causality and special relativity violations and elicits curiosity about the physical mechanisms responsible for these effects. This thesis will address these issues theoretically and ...

We present a boundary control law that stabilizes the Hartman profile for low magnetic Reynolds numbers in an infinite magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) channel flow. The proposed control law achieves stability in the L2 norm of the linearized MHD equations, guaranteeing local stability for the fully nonlinear system. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
