PURPOSE Neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPC) generate neurons and glia, a feature that makes them attractive for cell replacement therapies. However, efforts to transplant neural progenitors in animal models of brain injury typically result in high cell mortality and poor neuronal differentiation. METHODS In an attempt to improve the outcome for grafted NSPC after controlled cortical impac...

A synthetic polymer ligand-grafted plasmonic chip was fabricated and demonstrated a highly sensitive detection of C-reactive protein (CRP) by grating-coupled surface plasmon field-enhanced fluorescence. Poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl-phosphorylcholine) was used as a CRP-specific polymer ligand layer and was grafted onto the plasmonic chip using surface-initiated controlled/living radical polymeriz...

Consecutive grafting of crosslinked L-phenylalanine anilide, D-phenylalanine anilide and non-imprinted polymer layers on the surface of wide pore silica resulted in porous composite beads displaying enantiomeric discrimination reflecting the last grafted layer. This no longer holds for beads freed from silica, which instead display enantioselectivity reflecting the first grafted layer.

In-plane permeability of small area (100 × 50 mm) alumina fiber woven fabrics grafted with aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) was quantified by placing them in series a glass mat known during flow experiment. The methodology first validated on reference textile. Permeability values matched those obtained direct method within margin ±15%. Permeabilities radial-aligned (short CNT, SCNT) and so-called...

To determine if salt tolerance of grafted cucumber can be associated with the accumulation of organic solutes and inorganic solutes in the leaves and roots, a salt-sensitive cucumber cultivar Jinchun No. 2 (Cucumis sativus L.) was grafted onto the commercial salt-tolerant bottle gourd cultivar Chaofeng 8848 (Lagenaria siceraria Standl.). Grafted and ungrafted plants were grown in hydroponic sys...

Bemisia tabaci is one of the most devastating pests in tomato greenhouse production. Insecticide resistance management for B. tabaci requires a novel approach that maximizes non-chemical methods for pest control. The aim of this study was to test the effects of rootstocks on B. tabaci populations in hydroponically grown tomato plants. In order to contribute to the better understanding of the me...

In Citrus, water, nutrient transport and thereby fruit production, are influenced among other factors, by the interaction between rootstock and boron (B) nutrition. This study aimed to investigate how B affects the anatomical structure of roots and leaves as well as leaf gas exchange in sweet orange trees grafted on two contrasting rootstocks in response to B supply. Plants grafted on Swingle c...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Chilling results in a significant decrease in Rubisco content and increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cucumber (Cucumis sativus), a chilling-sensitive species. The role of roots in the regulation of the tolerance is unknown. Here, cucumber plants grafted onto figleaf gourd (Cucurbita ficifolia), a chilling-tolerant species were used to study the role of ...

Grafting β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) is a well-established method for restoring bone defects; however, there is concern that the mechanical stability of the grafted β-TCP is not maintained during bone translation. Teriparatide has an anabolic effect, stimulating bone formation and increasing bone mineral density for the treatment of osteoporosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate th...

Starch-coated polyethylene (PE) films were prepared by immersing PE in a hot, jet cooked solution of starch. They were allowed to react with acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of ceric ammonium nitrate initiator, and the graft polymerization that occurred produced starch-g-polyacrylonitrile (PAN) coatings that contained about 25 wt % grafted PAN. The starch-g-PAN coatings tightly adhered to the...
