Gonococcus typically affects the mucosal surfaces but in rare cases can spread to bloodstream causing disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI). The usual presentation of DGI is rash, polyarthralgia, and tenosynovitis. We present the case of a 23-year-old female who presented to our hospital with pustular rash and tenosynovitis of hand and was sent home on Augmentin. Her symptoms worsened despite...
An enzyme immunoassay was used to determine IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies to gonococcal pili in 68 patients with uncomplicated gonorrhoea, 35 women with pelvic inflammatory disease, and in 115 normal controls. A clear difference in response rate in all three antibody classes between patients with gonorrhoea and healthy controls was evident. Among women with gonorrhoea, the magnitude of antibody ...
Four hundred and ten female patients attending obstetric and gynaecological outpatient departments were investigated for possible gonococcal infection. All were in their reproductive phase. Forty-two (10.2%) of them harboured Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Of the infected patients, 40.5% had no symptoms at all. Investigation was carried out using a single, endocervical specimen cultured in Chacko-Nair ...
Four elderly patients (71, 53, 57, and 62 years old) had disseminated gonococcal infection. Three patients presented with suppurative arthritis and the fourth with fever, skin lesions, and malaise. Although the signs and symptoms did not differ from those in the younger age group, the diagnosis was not considered clinically. All gonococci were susceptible to penicillin.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is “an inflammation of the endometrium, fallopian tubes, pelvic peritoneum and/or contiguous structures”(1). The inflammation is caused by an infection of the genital tract which spreads upwardly from the vagina and endocervix to the upper reproductive tract. Approximately 75% to 85% of PID is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis(1-3). It h...
OBJECTIVE To provide recommendations on the management of gonococcal infection among adults and youth. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE Treatment recommendations in the Canadian guidelines on sexually transmitted infections are based on review of the literature, as well as the grades of recommendations and the levels of evidence quality determined by a minimum of 2 reviewers. The recommendations are peer-...
Murine genital tract infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae has previously been found to induce IL-17 which is important in both recruitment of neutrophils and prompt clearance of the infection. As IL-22 is another Th17-related cytokine that has been implicated in the immune responses in several infection models, we investigated its role in vaginal gonococcal infection of mice. Production of IL-2...
OBJECTIVE To define risk factors for gonococcal infection. METHODS A case-control study comparing 200 gonorrhoea cases with 400 patients with non-gonococcal genitourinary infections and 400 patients with various skin diseases, all of them attending City Department for Skin and Venereal Diseases In Belgrade (Yugoslavia) from October 1993 to December 1994. RESULTS According to multivariate lo...
Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been shown to form biofilms during cervical infection. Thus, biofilm formation may play an important role in the infection of women. The ability of N. gonorrhoeae to form membrane blebs is crucial to biofilm formation. Blebs contain DNA and outer membrane structures, which have been shown to be major constituents of the biofilm matrix. The organism expresses a DNA ther...
