Supermassive black holes in giant elliptical galaxies are remarkably faint given their expected accretion rates. This motivates models of radiatively inefficient accretion, due to either ion-electron thermal decoupling, generation of outflows that inhibit accretion, or settling of gas to a gravitationally unstable disk that forms stars in preference to feeding the black hole. The latter model p...

We consider the dilepton emission from a dense and hot hadron gas near a critical point. The hadron gas is described as a resonance one. The dilepton spectrum generated by vector resonances is shown to be equivalent to the one generated by quarks.
Emission profiles of the Galactic plane in K and at 240μm are presented, and features associated with the tangents of the spiral arms are identified. In the K band, which traces stellar emission and suffers little from absorbtion, features associated with the arm tangents indicate that a two-armed logarithmic spiral dominates the nonaxisymmetric structure of the Milky Way. In contrast, the 240μ...
This paper analyses banking and borrowing of carbon emission rights within the framework of a simple, integrated assessment model. Breaking the world economy in just two regions it will be shown: (1) Increasing when-flexibility in greenhouse gas abatement through banking and borrowing of carbon emission permits has a positive effect on welfare for regions with a poor endowment in carbon emissio...

Intense emission lines of near{IR molecular hydrogen are excited in OMC{1 by shocks, as outtowing gas from the star forming core interacts with the surrounding molecular cloud. These have been studied in OMC{1 in far greater detail than in any other astronomical source. They provide both a picture of the energetic activity associated with massive star formation, and stringent constraints on mod...
The effects of climate change on humans and other living ecosystems is an area of on-going research. The ruminant livestock sector is considered to be one of the most significant contributors to the existing greenhouse gas (GHG) pool. However, there are opportunities to combat climate change by reducing the emission of GHGs from ruminants. Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are emitted by ru...
Using a Hagedorn resonance gas picture and quark-hadron duality we estimate the dilepton emission rate in the vicinity of the QCD deconfinement phase transition. The result is then used to calculate a dilepton spectrum in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We show that multibody contributions taken into account in the Hagedorn resonance gas approach provide an enhancement of the production...
We carefully reanalyze the ROSAT PSPC X-ray spectro-photometric observations of HCG 16 (Arp 318), and compare them to optical and radio data. Its X-ray morphology resembles its morphology at 20 cm, seen by the NVSS. In particular, we detect diffuse emission in eight regions filling half of the 200h−1 50 kpc (8. ′7) radius circle around the optical center of the group: one region encompassing ga...
