The technique of tailoring the complex refractive index of an artificial dielectric material has been developed at the University of Lowell Research Foundation (ULRF). Low reflection coatings, generally referred to as Dällenbach layers, have been designed for metal substrates using the artificial dielectric. The method of characterizing materials for the purpose of tailoring their dielectric pr...

A facile process is introduced to flake high aspect-ratio anodic TiO(2) nanotube (TiNT) arrays off Ti substrates and then chemically remove the bottom caps to obtain open-ended TiNT films that exhibit high activity to photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and efficient hydrogen production from photoelectrocatalytic water splitting.

Two kinds of Bi2Se3 nanostructures, 3D rose-like hierarchitectures and monodisperse nanospheres, have been synthesized through adjusting the supersaturation of the precursor solution. Noticeable hydrogen storage capacity, amounting to 185 mA h g-1, has been found for the 3D rose-like hierarchitectures, which arises from the special micro/nano-hierarchitectures with highly crystallized flake-sub...

As 2D materials (2DMs) gain the research limelight as a technological option for obtaining on-demand printed low-cost integrated circuits with reduced environmental impact, theoretical methods able to provide necessary fabrication guidelines acquire fundamental importance. Here, multiscale modeling technique is exploited study electronic transport in devices consisting of 2DM network flakes. Th...

Reductive alkylation of three graphite starting materials G(flake), G(powder), and G(spherical) reveals pronounced differences in the obtained covalently functionalized graphene with respect to the degree of functionalization, exfoliation efficiency and product homogeneity, as demonstrated by statistical Raman microscopy (SRM), TGA/MS, IR-spectroscopy and solubility behavior.

Co(III) polyamine complexes with either two or three labile coordination sites bind strongly to high surface area metal oxides such as goethite or aluminium trihydroxide, and have been shown to act as passivating agents for aluminium flake in aqueous media, in addition to providing a potential method for surface functionalisation.

Strong quantization effects and tuneable near-infrared photoluminescence emission are reported in mechanically exfoliated crystals of γ-rhombohedral semiconducting InSe. The optical properties of InSe nanosheets differ qualitatively from those reported recently for exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenides and indicate a crossover from a direct to an indirect band gap semiconductor when the I...

Efficient visible light-induced photoelectrochemical oxidation of water was achieved using a tungsten(iv) oxide (WO(3)) film composed of perpendicularly oriented plate-like crystallites, a flake-wall film, prepared on a transparent conductive substrate by controlling anisotropic crystal growth of tungsten oxide hydrate (WO(3).H(2)O) followed by calcination.

Abstract Archaeologists have long considered climate change a primary mechanism behind human behavioral adaptations. The Lesotho highlands’ Afromontane and climatically extreme environments offer unique opportunity to examine proposed correlations between topography, climate, behavior. Previous studies suggest that warmer temperatures allowed humans expand their diet breadth foraging range, whe...
