The theory of finite-size scaling explains how the singular behavior of thermodynamic quantities in the critical point of a phase transition emerges when the size of the system becomes infinite. Usually, this theory is presented in a phenomenological way. Here, we exactly demonstrate the existence of a finite-size scaling law for the Galton-Watson branching processes when the number of offsprin...
Neural networks are analogous in many ways to spin glasses, systems which are known for their rich set of dynamics and equally complex phase diagrams. We apply well-known techniques in the study of spin glasses to a convolutional sparsely encoding neural network and observe power law finite-size scaling behavior in the sparsity and reconstruction error as the network denoises 32×32 RGB CIFAR10 ...
We discuss the shape dependence of the finite-size scaling limit in a strongly anisotropic O(N) model in the large-N limit. We show that scaling is observed even if an incorrect value for the anisotropy exponent is considered. However, the related exponents may only be effective ones, differing from the correct critical exponents of the model. We discuss the implications of our results for nume...
We report new results from our finite size scaling analysis of 4d compact pure U(1) gauge theory with Wilson action. Investigating several cumulants of the plaquette energy within the Borgs-Kotecky finite size scaling scheme we find strong evidence for a first-order phase transition and present a high precision value for the critical coupling, βT in the thermodynamic limit.
Monte-Carlo simulations are routinely used for estimating the scaling exponents of complex systems. However, due to finite-size effects, determining the exponent values is often difficult and not reliable. Here we present a novel technique of dealing the problem of finite-size scaling. The efficiency of the technique is demonstrated on two data sets.
Using a recently developed method to rigorously control the finite-size behaviour in long cylinders near first-order phase transitions, I calculate the finite-size scaling of the first q+1 eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of the q states Potts model in a d dimensional periodic box of volume L × . . . × L × t (assuming that d ≥ 2 and that q is sufficiently large). I find two simple eigenvalues...
