This chapter describes a technique for generating semi-abstract figurative imagery using variations on the Mandelbrot Set, evolved using a genetic algorithm. The Mandelbrot Set offers an infinite supply of complex fractal imagery, but its expressive ability is limited, as far as being a “material” for visual manipulation by artists. The technique described here achieves a unique and varied bran...

Separation methods used in organic chemistry are briefly reviewed, emphasis being placed on aspects that are frequently ignored, and special attention being paid to the analytical applications of separation. The relevance of physical, inorganic and analytical chemistry for organic chemistry is stressed. The term 'separation' can be used in analytical chemistry in both a literal and figurative s...

City Portraits and Caricatures Introduction Cities are a very rich source of data in order to understand how people organize themselves on different scales. The discourse on the visualization of cities offered different approaches, from more abstract to illustrative and figurative ones. In this chapter, we approach the visualization of cities in a less abstract, puristic way. Distancing ourselv...

We start with a rectangular grid of points, and we connect pairs of points to form either a tour (a Hamiltonian cycle) or a braid (a collection of disjoint paths that start in the top row and end on the bottom). In each case, our goal is to design a graph that will closely resemble a grayscale target image when viewed from a distance. From up close, the graph will look like an abstract pattern....

We describe in this article an annotation scheme for deep dependency syntax, built from the surface annotation scheme of the Sequoia corpus, abstracting away from it and expressing the grammatical relations between content words. When these grammatical relations take part into verbal diatheses, we consider the diatheses as resulting from redistributions from the canonical diathesis, which we re...

The relevance of the study is caused by the continuing interest of linguists to the problem of phraseology as a special – national – sign in the language system, reflecting the national-cultural features of the perception of the world, national mentality, ideological and mental attitudes of native speakers. The analysis of scientific literature showed that the phraseological layer reflecting th...

‏‎the investigation would certainly offer implications for translation, where the translators mostly adhere to only the ideational meaning of the sl text neglecting its textual meaning, a practice which mostly leads to target language texts which have lower readability(compared with their source language counterparts) due to their displaced thematization strategies.‎‏

We describe our contribution to the SemEval task on Frame-Semantic Structure Extraction. Unlike most previous systems described in literature, ours is based on dependency syntax. We also describe a fully automatic method to add words to the FrameNet lexical database, which gives an improvement in the recall of frame detection.

Models of idiom comprehension differ in their predictions concerning compositionality: Some claim that idiomatic meaning is the result of compositional analysis initiated at the earliest stages of comprehension, whereas others claim that compositional analysis occurs only at late stages, subsequent to direct retrieval--especially for idioms that are highly familiar. We evaluated these alternati...

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the time-course of processing metaphorical and literal sentences in the brain. ERPs were measured to sentence-final (Experiment 1) and mid-sentence (Experiment 2) critical words (CWs) as participants read and made plausibility judgments about familiar nominal metaphors ("A is a B") as well as literal and semantically anomalous sentences of the ...
